I am a Breastroker, and Freestyle is one of my worst strokes. My best time for a long course 50 m Free is 27.6. I haven't raced a 100 or 200 for years.

Sure, make it biased. Bring in the all meters discussion to exclude us Yanks who have no choice in the matter. We cannot help it if the US government won't ratify the Metric system over the Imperial system. :p

I elect not to swim freestyle events. the only meters freestyle event I know my time for is my SCM relay split of 26.21 and I am quite happy with that.

I know a lot of very soft sprinters who are like this.

From what I can remember mine go something like 25, 55, 1.55 but I wasn't blessed with an abundance of fast twitch fibres.

It's not always a blessing. I seem to have 'an abundance' of the buggers and all I get is stick for not being able to do 200s!

Well I wasn't going to say anything....

I have been 55 in a relay, and that was an electronic split so accurate. On the basis that my rolling start couldn't have been worth 2.5 seconds maybe one day I can do a 56 at least!

I think I'll log off now (sniff) you lot are great!
Slow wrinkly swimmer (aged group D, other Masters will understand)
My 50 (yes, fifty) time used to be about 45s, and my pb is now 41.05, and I'm proud of it. 100m is 1:40 or thereabouts but I haven't done it for a while, roll on Bracknell Masters next week.
Like the name says, GettingFaster, but I've got a LONG way to go before I could ever say I've got there!

I think if I put on a bathing suit it would be an alternative way for the swimmers of my team to do abdominal exercises, laughing really hard tends to hurt if you laugh long enough (especially if it was one of the old 26 'paper-suits'; if you go back that far). But as one gets older, they say, the better they used to be...What's wrong with the 400?

50m 24.50
100m 50.60
200m 1:46.47

I usually do 400 free in the International Masters meet here in Guernsey. The timetable of events doesn't really change from year to year and the 400 is always the last event on the Saturday night. I can usually squeeze into the last heat, its dark outside and most competitors have gone home. The atmosphere is very quiet and very calm making for a great environment to race in. After the days racing its a great way to unwind and I usually end up with a PB.

They were extremely tight suits that did not stretch. You wore them smaller so they would cause less drag, hence you only wore them at championships. But they could easily rip, and only lasted 2 or three meets. Speedo first addressed this issue with the popular S2000 suits that were the craze in time for the 1992 Olympics, then advanced on that with Aquablade for the 1996 Olympics, and then FastSkin for the 2000 Olympics.

what's a paper suit?

An evil device also known as a racing suit introduced in the early eighties as the next technologically superior material to the lycra. The material was 'crinkley' like paper when you would touch it, and earned the label 'paper-suit'. Like Swimusa has noted, it didn't stretch, and was painful to pull on, especially over shaved legs! I believe the material was a hybrid of nylon and lycra.

sub24

What's next? I think they will develop suits which will 'fill-in' the small bumps and dents on your body. This will act similiarily to the current top-of-the-line suits which squash much of the natural bumps on a body. If you notice a male's body, when very fit, has many muscle ridges on their body, and I think a suit that is custom made to make them more 'tubular' will increase the maximum speed significantly.

I also think a swim cap that is more streamlined, like the helmut's of the cyclists, may be in the cards for sprinting. Or smoothing down the head-hair like the synchro swimmers do with Jello could be more naturally stream-lined to a poorly fitting cap. However the cap with the goggles in them look so ridiculus that I am not sure if this will take off for some time.

swimusa
06-03-2003, 05:20 PM
I think they're still in the planning process. What would be nice would be to have these high tech suits last longer than 2 meets.

Where can you get the different colored fastskins? is there a website?

Steve
07-03-2003, 08:10 AM
Most US swimming websites sell them - I got my blue legskins from www.swim2000.com (based in las vegas) and I know others who have bought coloured fastskins from www.djsports.com (based in Austin, Texas I think)

www.ultimateswimshop.com was the cheapest I could find em (looks cheaper at a quick look at that above site) and the postage is $25 - £16 so get a few mates together and it brings down the postage
