The French Soccer team won the world cup when it was held in France in 1998, they beat Brazil in the Final, Zinedine Zidane Scored twice. This time round they lost in the group stages to Senegal and never made it to the next round. Erm....Mary Jose Perec was a very good female French 400m runner, she might be still around, I think she was world champion a couple of years ago. They have some more famous athletes like Tennis Player Mary Pierce who used to be quite good. The French soccer team goalkeeper is fabien Barthez who also keeps goal (not very well) for English team Manchester United. They also have some other good players in the English premiership like Patrick Viera for Arsenal, Marcel Desailly, Emmanuel Petit and Olivier Dacourt. Some French soccer teams could be Paris St. Germain. I know there's some more good athletes but I can't think of their names! Hope this helps you a bit!

As this is a swimming sites why not talk about swimming? You can find information on some of France's top swimmers such as Franck Esposito, Staphan Perrot, Xavier Marchand and Roxana Maracineanu here:
http://www.fina.org/biographies_Swimmers.html
Franck is a 3 times European loncourse champion and was the 1993 World shortcourse champion for 200m butterfly. I think he also used to hold a world record for the event.
Stephan was European junior champion for 200m breaststroke in 1994 and came of age in 1999 when he won the European senior title for this event in both the longcourse and shortcourse pools. He successfully defended the shortcourse title in 2000.
Maracineanu was World loncourse champion for 200m backstroke in 1998 and European champion in 1999. She finished second in the same event in Sydney.
Hope this helps...
