I don't know about anyone else but I find swimming length after length really boring like 800m or 400m or whatever so I sing to myself when I'm singing lol...I know it's daft but you have to pass the time somehow...Strange question this but what does everyone else think about when they're swimming a few lengths? Technique, music? Tell me! I must distract myself from the boredom!

Well you asked for this...

Years ago when I was a little 6th former studying A-level maths, I used to try and mentally solve my homework. The strange thing is, it actually worked.

These days, being old and grey, I find there's enough technique stuff to think about to keep me occupied. Well, that is so long as the distances don't get too high; 400m reps are quite far enough thanks.

You wouldn't be the first (or the last!) swimmer to sing to themselve during long repeats, loads of people do (<a href="http://www.pullbuoy.co.uk/heidi.html" target="_blank">Heidi Earp</a> admitted to it when I interviewed her 18 months ago or so...), as do I and similar to BigFish I often about features for the site or worse work  He's right though, often I come up with good stuff. Unfortunately I can never remember it when I get home

On that note has anyone ever used one of those radios that you can use whilst training? I considered getting one at one point but never did.

I have coached swimmers who sang and you could hear them singing when they breathed on Freestyle. They were the animal trainers who loved to eat distance.

I always sing in training. I have been getting to grips with a snorkel recently, as have the rest of the squad. We've all discovered that if you hum or make any weird noises when using a snorkel, everyone hears. As one person discovered when their burp was echoing around the pool...!!!

Katie - do you use a nose clip for snorkling?
I heard someone singing the other day. Couldn't work out what is was!

Nope, I don't use a nose clip. I used to drown all the time but I'm getting a bit better at it! The turns still kill me though, it's impossible to come out of the turn with a water-free snorkel!!!

I usually sing the last song on the radio in the car ride to the pool, or usually and upbeat song when I swim distance free. WHen I swim distance IM, I just think about how technical I need to be with my strokes.

When I was younger I used to sing songs in my head all the time. These days I am a bit more focused. I try and maintain my concentration by doing things such as counting my strokes, concentrating on turns, concentrating on a particular component of my stroke or 'racing' the person next to/behind me/in front of me.

when i was younger i used to always sing. these days my mental rants go somehting along the lines of:
you're catching her
no you're not,
yes you are,
stop rolling about so much,
kick,
no pull,
oh dammit, last again!

I used to sing Queen's song 'Another 1 bites the dust' when training as I passed swimmers!

Our training group used to like to throw out a quick part of a song just before a big set, something terrible like row-row-your-boat or the most recent annoying top40 hit that was getting too much play time on the radio. And then see who couldn't get that out of their head for the set. You'd have to do it slyly, like whistling the tune and then afterwards someone would say: "I had that crap song stuck in my head for that whole ten 400's".

For a laugh...

lol! i get songs in my head when we r doing hard long sets, eg a fast paced one to keep my tempo up, it helps me for some reason! i dont tend to sing aloud tho coz im concentrating too much usually.

Don't get stuck singing the song from the Hyundai advert. Nice to hear the Velvet Underground again. How long before it gets re-released?

At our team before a long set we decide on a topic, for example - movies, and then each one has to think about his top 5-10-15-20 movies... usualy it works.
