It grates on me somewhat that it is possible for City of Leeds to qualify(assuming the accuracy of the postings) for the girls 4 x 200 free using a time from the ASANER BAGCAT Championships and the girls 4 x 100 medley using a time from the SNAGs.
I don't think that this should be possible and if BAGCAT qualifying rules permit it then perhaps Scottish rules should be changed to prevent English teams using the SNAGs for a second qualifying opportunity. It conjures up all sorts of potential problems with the management and checking of team lines between meets now that second (and indeed third, fourth and fifth teams for Plymouth Leander) can qualify albeit none of them are likely.
Can English teams qualify at Welsh Nationals?
Linny
21-06-2009, 12:22 PM
Thinking about it, also, because Scottish relays are held in the finals sessions and entries may have to be limited, it isn't fair for Scottish teams to potentially miss out on an opportunity to compete and possibly qualify in favour of an English team who will have an opportunity in their own Regionals anyway. :clear:

Linny has a good point. Who checks that Club Team A at Scottish Nationals does not have crossover members with Club Team B at ASA Regional Age Groups and then they both qualify?

Linny has a good point. Who checks that Club Team A at Scottish Nationals does not have crossover members with Club Team B at ASA Regional Age Groups and then they both qualify?I'm not even sure that strictly speaking there is a rule precluding it PP. Had the fastest City of Leeds 4 x 100 medley team at ASANER been called the "B Team" then would they not be entitled to qualify if all the rules state isThe fastest 30 teams will be accepted into the team events irrespective of English Region, Scotland or Wales. In the event of equal times being submitted for the final available place, a ballot will determine. The names of 2 reserve teams will be published.and they would be fine when they got there because quite rightly, once they get to Sheffield, a Club does not have to field the same team that qualified. These Regional Relays aren't heats as such, so the regularly applied rules about team members only being able to swim for one team don't apply as far as I can see.
Anyway, this hasn't happened here, I'm not suggesting it has, but had the Clubs that travel to SNAGs been a bit stronger and thus qualifying several teams then it could have. It's just an unnecessary complication and the simplest thing would be for teams to be able to qualify from their own respective regions/home countries only I reckon or for the ASA to ask promoters for those qualifying meets that are open to entries from Clubs in other regions, such as SNAGs, to disallow entries into their relay events from outside teams.
Linny

In fact, here I am a couple of hours later thinking, and if you have a particular type of disturbed mind like mine, there is lots of scope for inappropriate qualification of relay teams for ASAs unless there are rules that I am not aware of.
Because SNAGs is held on a different date, there is nothing that I can see to prevent English Club swimmers swimming in relays for second claim Scottish Clubs or vice versa as well as their first claim Clubs. I mean, a whole relay team from a top team could swim for a second claim Club to qualify them or the ASAs in theory. OK, so it would kind of defeat the object because none of them would then be able to swim in Sheffield and they would come last but it could be helpful in terms of points. :)
Again, not suggesting this has happened, but now I'm thinking maybe relays at regionals should be considered heats for the finals in Sheffield. :zip:

I would suspect that the original intention was that clubs would only be able to qualify in their "home" event and the Scottish (and Welsh?) anomalies are an unexpected side effect. ISTM that it would make sense to close the loophole and only allow each club a single chance to qualify.

'The simplest thing' would be to allow only English Clubs to qualify, through their respective regions.
It is the ASA (i.e English) Championships!!.
Ah, now you really start to get into some interesting waters as the ASA National BACGAT & Youth Championships are, by implication, ASA events. So England only then, you're suggesting?

Presumably after Scottish Nationals (this coming weekend) which is the last qualifying opportunity.

If you go into the online entries for the Age Groups on the ASA website you will find a list of the qualified relay teams at the end of the list of entries to date.
I think Scottish Age Groups in April were the qualifying event not the coming Scottish Nationals.

Today, after they received the results from the postponed NER's? they're in the Rankings now, or should I stick to Masters.

Qualifying Opportunity for what? - certainly not the ASA National Age, Youth & Long Course Championships. Closing dates are before the Scottish Nationals
