This was in the paper today - the top 30 film moments of all time. Don't know who or how many people were involved in deciding this but interesting and a little surprising so thought I'd share it with those who might not have seen it:

By JOHN COLES

THE bloody beach landing in Saving Private Ryan has been voted best movie scene of all time.

The shock opening to Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic topped a poll of 17,000 people.

The grisly scene graphically showed Allied soldiers being shot to pieces as they invaded a Normandy beach.

The 1998 film starred Tom Hanks and won five Oscars, including best special effects.

Second place in the poll for Choices video shops went to the first shark attack in Jaws.

The creature bursting out of John Hurt in Alien was third and the sinking of the Titanic fourth.

Choices spokesman Gerad Barclay said: “It’s particularly encouraging to see so many classics from the Sixties and Seventies up there.

“Films like Dirty Harry and The Italian Job are high up alongside newer titles like The Matrix.”

Top 30 movie scenes
1. Saving Private Ryan (1998) — opening beach landing scene.
2. Jaws (1975) — first shark attack.

11. When Harry Met Sally (1989) — Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm.
12. The Italian Job (1969) — final ‘cliff-hanger’ scene.
13. Saturday Night Fever (1977) — John Travolta’s dancefloor scene.
14. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) — final freeze-frame as outlaws face the bullets.

i DEFINIETLY aggree with Saving Private Ryan being at the top, we studied the opening sequences for GCSE and it is simply AMAZING, everything about it and so cleverly constructed with simply AMAZING results.

Haha! Isn't that a bit graphic for schools? We studied Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

Steve why International Man Of Mystery? I don't see Austin Powers in that list?! I agree with most of those 30 although some I haven't seen. At the moment I can think of a couple which maybe deserve a place but they're not from as high profile films as most of them so not surprised they aren't in there.

You'll have to ask Chris that one - all I asked was to stop being "Santa's little helper"....Just haven't got round to thinking of anything good to replace it!

How about the last few scenes in "One flew over the cuckoos Nest" also Donald Sutherland reliving his life as he lays dying in "Don't Look Now". Having said that I am not really cultured at all and my all time favourite has to be the round the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles when the sherriff comes up and says "I think you boys have had about enough beans". Has me in stiches every time. Sad but true!

can I just point out that Brad Pitt didn't open the box in se7en he didn't even go near it, or at least that scene was never shown! Dodgy list, it was the same mistake in my newspaper today too.

i know its not a movie but all time favourite is Pride and Prejudice. So clever and makes me cry too. I had to study the book for o level (remember them??!!). its fabulous to read over and over.
Chris - a man who cries over a movie - thats so sweet! Nothing better than a movie, wine, chocolates and a box of tissues. Hee hee!!

I think the 10 minutes that Judi Dench is in "Shakespeare in Love" was a great part (especially because she won the Oscar for it :))

20. The Full Monty (1997) — dole queue dance to ‘Hot Stuff’.

I love The Full Monty!! I used to live just outside of where it was filmed.

Billy Elliot is amazing too. I love the scene where he's dancing to T-Rex in the gym hall with his teacher. My old next door neighbour and his dad used to be just like Billy and his dad! All you'd ever hear from next door was a lot of swearing and loud crashes! The little boy didn't want to be a dancer though, he wanted to be a singer!!!

He does open the box and see what's inside. Maybe if you saw it on TV that bit was edited out I don't know? Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and Leon are all great films, but do they have any really memorable scenes? Remember that is what this list is about - not great films but great scenes from great films.

It was Morgan Freeman who opened the box and had a look in se7en, not Brad...he justed asked what was in the box then shot Kevin Spacey.

Possible spoiler if you haven't seen the Shawshank redemption!

What about the twist when they take the poster off the wall to find a the tunnel? Now that was a memorable scene. I can remember a huge gasp in the cinema when it happened. No one had spotted it coming at all. Fantastic!

A beautiful mind was very good however far from the truth - you must read the book to get the truth. The film pictured a hero as usual however the book portrayed a very sad selfish man who happenned to have a gift.

Yes but books are boring, films are good.

Watched 'sixth sense' again as it was on T.V last night. It is such a good film, and I love the twist at the end. It kinda took the edge off it though explaining to Chris every two seconds what was happing and that he was unknowingly dead (sorry if that has spoilt the ending for anyone)
