Hope Joanne does not mind me copying this from Google but I thought this was brill!!!
'I have watched the last few days events unfold and wanted to put a GB view
point forward:
Going into these world championships GB would have been happy winning any
medals after the Olympics last year. The women's 4x200 free relay was one of
the events where we thought we could have had a good chance of winning one
(with having two girls recently going under the 2:00 barrier). I watched the
event live on Eurosport and at the start was very optomistic for the girls
to do well. All of the girls swam their hearts out and when Karen dived in
for the last leg it needed another last leg relay swim that karen is
brilliant at doing to even be in contention for the bronze. She pulled us
into that position and before the recent events unfolded they would have
been happy to have been on the podium.
We then moved into silver and I caught the faces of the GB team on the TV,
they were obviously happy, knowing that they had been beaten into the bronze
medal but the board showing they had the silver. The rest they say is
history but if anyone then watched the awards ceremony when the girls were
awarded the Gold then that tells another. The girls did not show the real
emotion of winning the gold medal out right. Although they were wearing the
medals, knowing the girls, I am sure they would rather have won them out
right.
However, in Great Britain they will come back as World Champions, rightly or
wrongly, this is going to have a positive effect on our profile as a sport
in GB (If anyone remembers Jonathon Edwards comments at the Olympics last
year you may understand). It made the main stream media, not for the
negative side but for once because we had won, GB swimming is on the up and
hopefully a positive can come out of this and our improvements continue into
the next Olympics and beyond.
Bill Sweetenham has said that all competitions are a build into the
Olympics. Hopefully we can all learn from what has happened and move on. The
girls would have felt some sympathy for the other swimmers, they are all
good friends, but the result stands as it is at the moment and they are the
Gold medal winners.
I am sure when it comes to the Commonwealth Games next year on home turf we
are going to want to prove our worth, the Aussies are going to want to prove
a point! Manchester should be a good race....
Congrats to the whole of the GB Team, it is good to see us back on the
podium, whatever the colour of the medal.
It's also good to see we have the shortest National Anthem!!
