Session went well. Some keen but unfit swimmers as well as some who have kept fit elsewhere. One guy had not swum for 11 years swam nearly 2000m. More swimmers possibly next week. It was great seeing some old (not in years) faces and they were pleased to see each other after a number of years.
Thanks for everyones interest.

Thanks Pete, I really enjoyed the session last night! It was good to get back in the water after such a long break :)

And of course, if the swimmers don't enjoy your sessions Pete, they can always come along to Guildford!

You masters are so fortunate to have loads of masters clubs in a close proximity. Here in East Anglia it is much harder to get pool time because the clubs appear only to see the future with the kids. I had to beg to get more pool time to improve my times!
When I move, I think swim clubs could be a major factor!

The best Masters squads have pub nights after training. Which pub do Guildford use?

Pete
03-05-2004, 07:58 PM
One year on and the squad is still keen and much fitter. One group of young ladies are not happy unless they do 3000m in an hour (all my sessions include variety of stroke and stroke-work). Others set their own goals and look forward to help with technique. I'm still enjoying it.

Nah, I don't think it would even be worth getting out of bed for. Unless of course I do the 50 and she does the 800, now then you might get a finish at around the same time.

It's in the Masters Swimming bit, and swimmer will be a pre-master next year. Quite a way from your original post but not completely off the subject - at least it's not talking about pistachio ice-cream, one memorable off-topic aside from young matt a few months back that still makes me smile.

Tell you what, this race sounds more and more interesting!
Perhaps we could charge for admission?!!! :p

The day I do 20m fly is in the far distant future - 200m? 800m free is a far more realistic goal, as long as the pool has been hired for the whole day!!!! :)

Not in a 10 lane pool :) (Assuming that the lanes are numbered 1 to 10 and not 0 to 9...)

Marginally more chance of my doing 200m breast than 200m fly!!
If you taught me how, it might even be legal!!!! :shocking:

GettingFaster
06-05-2004, 09:56 AM
Now that WOULD be an interesting race. Considering my PB on 200 breast is a couple of hundredths shy of 5 minutes (yes, I did say FIVE, it wasn't a typo!) then you'd have an awfully long wait at the end.

How about getting lane4, Bootie and Chris to do 400 breast while ruthcp and I do 200? Katie could even join in with a 300, just to prove she can. That way we might all finish together. And chris_lamb can be referee - should be good for loads of bribes, chris.

I feel another thread coming on - can you think of any 'interesting' races you'd like to see, either proper ones (e.g. Johnnie Weismuller at his peak swimming against Grank Hackett) or silly ones like the above.

chris_lamb
06-05-2004, 10:02 AM
And chris_lamb can be referee - should be good for loads of bribes, chris.

Bribes are always welcome :)

No, wait, of course I would never accept a bribe, I am far too honest and fair to do that...

Does your club have a Masters coach? If not, then you can enter things individually. Take a look at the ASA site in the Calendar info page on Masters and there are lots of Masters meets to think about. The one to go for is Nationals in October, up in Sheffield, but unfortunately its programme and entry info isn't on the site yet.
There's some date info on the newsletter though, try http://www.britishswimming.org/vsite/vfile/page/fileurl/0,11040,5026-146717-163933-53675-0-file,00.pdf

thanks GF!! We dont have a masters coach because the club is too small. But I shall definitely look on the ASA site......masters nationals would be sooooo cool especially since I'd never qualify for normal masters!........thats not implying that masters aren't normal........

Don't be shy about it - Masters AREN'T normal, we're very, very special! And if you do manage to do Sheffield you might even meet our very own Kaci who's in your agegroup and swims really fast.

06-05-2004, 01:07 PM
oh crumbs! only just realised my mistake there!! i meant to say i'd never qualify for normal nationals!! Oh well.

Are there qualifying times for the masters nationals? If so what are they or where can I find them??

Yeh, I've seen some of Kaci's times......her freestyle is faster than mine  my excuse is Im a fly swimmer! hehe :)

GettingFaster
06-05-2004, 01:13 PM
Qualifying for Masters is very difficult, there are many criteria you have to meet - if you fail to meet even one of these, then you can't enter the Nationals.

You have to be:

1) 19 or over at the end of the year (none of this "age on day" rubbish!)
2) able to fill in a form
3) able to write a cheque
4) in posession of a valid ASA number
5) able to sign your name

That's it. Tough, eh? Welcome to the inclusive world of Masters swimming!

You might be interested to see the results from last year's Nationals, or even the recent long-course GB Nationals. That will show you that the range of abilities of Masters swimmers is very broad, so even if you're a really fast swimmer you'll still get a decent race. If you're a really slow swimmer you'll just swim with much older swimmers and still get a decent race. Personally, I swim with the 80-yr-olds. :D

Ooooh that is tough criteria to meet! I think I can manage the age, and the ASA number...but writing....sounds like I need to get in training for that!!

I'll look up last years results....are they on the ASA site? I'll see how I compare but I'll still try and come anyway, I might even bring a friend!! Yey, this sounds like fun! hehe :)

Take your pick from any of this lot on the ASA website. See if you can spot a few swimclubbers.

Hey Hey
One of my old National Age Groupers turned up to swim at Masters tonight 10 years on. The squad certainly turned on a show and trained so well. Pub was good as a result as well.
