I bought some really cool reverable drag shorts the other day. Mainly because we have to wear drag at training, well supposed to and instead of wearing two pairs of bathers which puts pressure on my shoulder I bought some drag shorts thinking it wouldn't be as tough, I was wrong.

Does anyone else find the speedo drag shorts really tough? And I thought wearing two/three pairs of bathers created loads of drag. Lets hope the extra work will pay off.

Even though they're tough they do help you because they make you work harder, i'm sure it'll be better after you've worn they for a couple of days.

My son wears 2 pair of bathers then Kieffer drag shorts for all training sessions and warm ups before galas in them as well before putting on his fastskins to race.

I just make do with 2 pairs of bathers and a "drag gut", kinda works for me!

Two pairs of bathers does nothing in comparison especially for boys/men. As for the gut....No comment!

Is it worth me "joining the club" and buying a pair of "drag shorts" to improve my swimming then?

Drag shorts kill for about the first month, but you feel so fast when you take them off to race. The only problem is putting them back on after galas. Go for it Bootie

The lack of hair would even out the effect that the drag shorts would give, so no benefit would obtained......hey I sound like what you did when you were telling me about fastskins and hair :p

Mine are huge (keep your comments to yourself please ;) ) so it feels like I'm dragging a parachute behind me when I swim!!!

I was at a gala recently where one team's girls all did warm-up in what I think were supposed to be drag shorts but they were all really tiny and really close-fitting so I couldn't see how they could have added ANY drag!

sometimes even tho it appears they r really tight u woodn't believe the amount of drag u get out of them!!

Err, maybe I wont buy some from Gerrards then! It was open last November when I were there last, but obviously a lot of water under the bridge since then.

Wear a pair of 40 denier tights under your costume with feet (of tights) cut off. This creates enough drag but does not affect body position in the water.

My swimmers wear tights (40 denier, very important) all the time while training. We are division 3 Rother and we beat one div 1 and one div 2 team to finish 3rd so it must be working.

mammamedley

it works - we used to do it years ago!!! and we also used to drag a bowl with holes in on a rope attached to a rubber band round our ankles!! and my Dad had some paddles made that were the size of a kickboard!!

They would be really hard to use!!!!! I would hate it if Alison went on a giant kick-board size hand paddles phase and made us wear them as much as possible.

I used to wear tights when I a little one. It felt stupid at first but I recall feeling better when my coach swam the warm up with me the next day! I actually prefered swimming with a t shirt though. Do kids still have the fun we had?

Humm,

interesting that you should mention Tights, I was working in america a few years back and it seems this was quite a popular thing to do, women and men were wearing what they call pantyhose, I tried it and found it really helped me, maybe it was the support or the drag or lack of it, not sure which, but I was getting more lengths than before.

Anyone else tried them?

Chris arranged this last year for the Barracudas when they went to Lanzarote. They looked great and someone took a brilliant photograph of the swimmers all wearing matching drag shorts with their nicknames on.

www.agonswim.com (http://www.agonswim.com)

they have names on the back and also different patterns.

it is an american site, so they do take a few weeks to come, but there only £15 plus £3/£4 p&p so there worth the wait :D

Only thing about agon swim is that there is international shipping fees for us in the UK, and the after-sales service I had when one went missing was absolute rubbish. In my early days we used to wear tights instead of drag shorts.

My first spidey suit fitted well, but the stiching came away at the bottom of the zip. The costume was sent back for a refund as they said they could repair it - the material around the zip could not be repaired. I never got it back and no refund. 3 years later I eamil every now and then but get no reply - at all.

I've been wearing drag shorts every session for the past 3 years or so (at least).

I'm not sure I notice the difference when I'm not wearing them any more!

This thread reminded me of something that has been cause for some concern. I've noticed the penchant for long shorts shown by a lot of youngsters - OK for a pool but not in open water.

Drag shorts or any other form of long or otherwise restrictive swim kit should NEVER be worn in open water. You never know if some situation will arise where you will need your full ability - perhaps to save your own or possibly another's life.

So if you're swimming in river, lake or sea - best stick to the skimpies.

To be honest it's not as if drag shorts are made of lead. The difference they make is minimal.

Haha yeah that was a kinda spur of the moment thing there, but I dont really like my stomach that much, because i cant seem to find any muscle, no matter how much poking and prodding i do. i go about the task with the gusto of a three year old opening a mars bar, but i never get rewarded for my efforts :banghead:

Hi, Chris.
I've been reading this thread with interest because I waited for a good reason to wear them. I still haven't heard one & your comment bears out the reason not to wear them. What happens when the added drag doesn't affect you any more? Add another suit? Then what? Anyway, by reading a lot of the comments many people admit the benefit isn't lasting as you either get used to it gets easier...
yeh i bought drag shorts last year, i wore them until xmas, then i took them off for like a week and when i put them back on it was so tough so i havn't worn them since!

Even though they're tough they do help you because they make you work harder, i'm sure it'll be better after you've worn they for a couple of days.

yea drag shorts are HARD! but they help tons =) the first week is the hardest, but dont worry it gets much easier after that

My son wears them in every session, whether they do any good I have no idea, but he's the only one in his club who does wear them, one of the other lads (no 1 swimmer in the club) wears 2 pairs of trunks instead of drag shorts.

The way I look at it is they can't do any harm and psychologically if when he puts his racing kit on he believes that he has so much less drag then that can only be a good thing.
