View Full Version : Who's gonna be at Sheffield in October?

Currently trying to decide if I'm gonna be fit enough to re-commence my competitive career at the National Masters at Ponds Forge at the end of October.

Not nearly fit enough at the moment :p

There's not gonna be much pool time over the summer because we're not sending anyone to youth/age group Nationals this year.

Can I get fit enough over the Summer not to make an idiot of myself?

Only recent performance to use as a guide was a 2:46 200 breast during May (PB's a 2:32 from July 2001)

How much traning were you doing then? (In the lead up to May), and how much traning can you get before October?

I am possibly going, haven't decided yet. Will see how I swim at Hampshire Masters. I won't be attempting any 200s though (I'd be pretty chuffed with 2:46 these days)!!

chris, definitely go! even if you dont do any pbs, you'll have a great time and it'd be so awesome to meet all your friends again [if you havent seen them since you stopped competing] and as pete said in my thread, you'll be hungry. what do you have to lose? ;D

i hope you go :p g'luQ!

Go on Chris, make the effort even if you don't make the pb's. If you commit to going that'll give you the motivation to get on with the training if you don't want to make an idiot of yourself. As an aside though, if you think you'll make an idiot of yourself (even if you swim like a brick) you're surely missing the point of Masters swimming. Surely you of all people know that it's impossible to make an idiot of yourself? Swimming really slow just means you swim with slightly older swimmers, doesn't it? Personally, I don't mind swimming with the 80-yr-olds, they're great company and an inspiration!

I'll be there, even if I don't actually get in the pond as I don't know if I'll be swimming again following the "slice and dice" on the ole shoulder. I certainly won't be doing any pb's but it'll be a laugh, and I'll get the chance to meet a few names from the board. Bootie did mention he'd be going and there will be a massive contingent from Guildford City there.

Incidentally, GCSC romped away with the Ladies trophy at Surrey Champs, and our boys weren't too far behind. I was there in spirit but they managed to win even without my efforts!

you just gotta do it!

I agree!
Depending on whether i am in oz or not (which depends on the overtraining/blood glucose problems - so complicated I know!) I will go if I am in the country! Its Ponds Forge short course, how could I resist! If I do go I will probably have a go at getting some records for my age before I become a "real" masters swimmer! It was a great event last year, relaxed, good atmosphere, oh and I swam fast ;-)

I didn't! :( But hopefully if I take my glasses this year I'll be able to see the boom and I might get at least one good turn during the weekend...

Do you not turn at one end then baz? Definitely 7 turns I'm afraid...

dive,
length 1, turn 1
length 2, turn 2 (50m)
length 3, turn 3
length 4, turn 4 (100m)
length 5, turn 5
length 6, turn 6 (150m)
length 7, turn 7
length 8, finish (200m)

:)

That's where he is going wrong!

In Bazza's defence I think he probably meant 6 more than the normal 1 which = 7. If I'm wrong then I concur that he is an idiot.

but seeing as I said the 200 would be 7 more chances to do a good turn....

We discussed this at swimming this morning. I read Tara's post as meaning if I did a 200 there are 7 more turns than in a 50, which of course there are not, as the 50 has 1 turn so the 200 has an additional 6!

Of course as Tara explained to me this morning, she meant if I did the 200 (as opposed to not doing it), I would get an extra 7 turns!

At least Rogant was on the same wavelength as me!! :p

Still, none of this alters the fact that I get the chance to do dozens of turns in the warmup and still didn't get it right when racing!

I blame the fact we raced so late at night it was pitch black outside and I felt the lighting in the pool was quite poor - especially in the middle of the pool (ie where the boom is), but that's just because I can't accept I just made a hash of it! :(

I didn't get the chance to swim the first night, my plane was late into Manchester and then I couldn't find a car parking space at the Hotel. Got to the pool too late to post my cards and missed my first two events! Not to worry though as next day I spotted my 200 breast turns to perfection and got a PB and a bronze medal, wahay!

Just booked my flight and the hotel for 24/25/26 October.

It's costing me £140 to fly over to Manchester and another £100 for the two nights in a hotel (Executive suite however, a bargain for a frequent traveller!!)

I guess I'd better step up the training a bit now to justify the expense :p

Oh, and I'd better fill in the entry form as well

Chris, where will you be staying? I gather our lot will be in the Novotel because the Hilton's full. Oh, and I've decided I am actually going to enter, not just sit in the supporter's chair.

I'm staying at the Holiday Inn - Sheffield West (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc/1/en/hd/EMASY). It's a bit of a trek to the pool, but that's no big problem.
