I don't even remember Rome - just Perth, Fukuoka and now Barcelona.

Did a quick search but couldn't find anything, except that Montreal are the next hosts in 2005!

i certainly hope that they'll build a new pool for 2005 in montreal!! the olympic pool there is terrible to swim in, especially in the backstroke because of the dome. im sure we've been through this before, but hehe :p

According to Barcelona site, they are the 10th championships.

Memory tells me that most of these have been short course.

Indianoplis 2004 say they are 7th SC Worlds

I'm sure that there have been 10 LC champs, or to put it another way I can think of more than 3 LC venues! In fact I think the full listing of venues is as follows:

Long course:
1973 Belgrade
1975 Cali (Columbia)
1978 W. Berlin
1982 Guayaquil, Ecuador
1986 Madrid
1991 Perth
1994 Rome
1998 Perth
2001 Fukuoka
2003 Barcelona
2005 Montreal

Short Course:

1993 Palma de Mallorca, Spain
1995 Rio de Janeiro
1997 Gothenburg
1999 Hong Kong
2000 Athens
2002 Moscow
2004 Indianapolis

I only just realised my rather embarrasing gaffe now...!

 Getting my years right would be a start...!!!

But a big yay for Melbourne who will host the champs (http://www.foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,6745077-23210,00.html) in 2007

So add in 2007 Melbourne and has anyone noticed Australia getting alot of World Champs action?

12 Champs, 3 of which have been in Australia and 2 in Spain. Then "non-swimming" nations like Yugolavia, Columbia and Ecuador have hosted the champs but not the USA or many major European nations.

Not that the United States hasn't tried. I forget which year, but we were suppossed to have had the Championships but a facilities problem caused them to be given up. Also, our bid for the 2005 Games was unsuccessful by one or two votes to Montreal. So, no one can really blame the US for not trying.

Hey I never said they hadn't tried, just found it surprising that the champs had been hosted multiple times by Australia and Spain, yet not once by many major European nations and also the US.

Indianapolis has hosted the SC champs, as have Spain, but again a couple of surprising venues which I wouldn't particularly associate with swimming like Hong Kong and Rio. Not that this means hose places shouldn't host the World Champs. Must be very nice places to go for a major international competition!! :D

I would really like to have seen all of the presentations for the 2007 World Championships. I'm sure that if they were making presentations to FINA that they were technically sound. I just wonder if I personally would have voted to send the championships to Australia the third time in light of the other presentations.

I have to say Rio was excellent. The pool was a temporary pool built into the sand on Copacobana (sp!) Beach! Due to the flights home we even got to do some sights, which was a bonus as you usually only get to see the pool, airport, hotel and the roads inbetween!
