View Full Version : soft meringue

Following Alex Popov's heat swim this morning, Eurosport commentator Drew Gordon described it [the swim] as...
"...like a soft meringue coming out of the oven, beautiful."
Unbelievable.

The man is an absolute joke and is clearly employed by Eurosport directors with a very poor grasp of the English language (just like he has).

I heard that, and was equally stunned!
Try as I might, I still haven't worked out quite what he meant - maybe he doesn't know either!

It is a shame that they have spent so much time using the little english they have command of, insulting the slower swimmers from developing countries!
Furthermore, they seem to go on and on about it too.

But they aren't as bad as the cycling commentator. He spent ten minutes talking about his marmite sandwich last week :)

But meringue is MUCH nicer if it's crispy!

Still haven't seen any heats sessions to be able to comment on them abusing no-hopers, but that seems to be something Eurosport are OK with.
Their boxing commentator is a master of the genre - I think they must get most of their fights cheap from the TV equivalent of a remaindered book shop. So if he gets two lard-****s fresh out of jail who need to lose six stone between them, he's not afraid to say so.
It does make a change from the sycophancy towards sport on many other channels.

Agreed, though in this instance, anything would be better than the verbal diarrhoea they seem intent on delivering daily!
We've almost taken to turning the sound down so we can watch the swimming without that pair of morons droning on!
Come on BBC, lets have some more swimming coverage to give us a choice of channel!

i agree totally GF! :D
i dont see why the british cant get former swimmers to comment! in the states, we have peggy fleming/scott hamilton for figure skating and summer sanders/etc. for swimming. makes for MUCH better commentary.. i suppose the typical non-swimmer wouldnt understand, but i also think that more swimmers than non-swimmers would be watching the races!

I've never heard of him (though admitedly that doesn't mean much!)
I just hope he was a better swimmer than he is a commentator!!!

But then we might end up with Sharon Davies commentating, and have to put up with even more of her. And the eurosport diving commentator is an (ex?)-diver, and he is incredibly boring to listen to.

He won the silver in the English 1-2-3 in the 1990 Commonwealth Games 100 Breaststroke event (behind Moorhouse and in front of Gillingham).
I'm sure Drew Gordon has never broke sweat in his life other than when Eurosport directors threatened to check his CV.

A former swimmer does not necessarily make a good commentator!
The commentators on swimming in Britain are James Parrack (former Olympic swimmer), Drew Gordon (former coach), Adrain Moorhouse (former Olympic champion swimmer), Andy Jameson (former Olympic medallist swimmer), Sharon Davies (former Olympic medallist swimmer), Anita Lonsborough (former Olympic champion swimmer) and Bob Ballard (no swimming background).
(So looks like you're a bit out of touch nss)
Of these I would suggest that Ballard is easily the best. And I would gladly take Paul Dickenson and/or Stuart Storey (usually heard on athletics programmes) over any of them any day.

When have Anita Lonsborough and Bob Ballard ever commentated? I can't ever remember them. Lonsborough is known to me as a writer for the telegraph.
It is pretty annoying the number of mistakes they made. And I feel sorry for anyone coached by Drew Gordon...... :(

oh i see :o :p sorry :D you'd think that with their experience, they would at least avoid terrible comments such as those that have been discussed on various threads recently!

I domhave the choice of channel here in Spain, since the Chanpionships are held here. There's an extensive coverage of all the heats in the morning and the semi & finals every evening. Nevertheless, my friends, I have to tell you that I prefer to watch Eurosporst in English. Gordon and Parrack are so much more interesting and amusing to listen to than their spanish colleagues. Not only they are dead boring but their ignorance about swimming is really outstanding.
