There's loads of different software available for downloading stuff from the web now. What do you use?

you didn't put kazaa lite down (much less adware than proper kazaa) although I suppose it's the same p2p network.

Is it worth pointing out that none of these actually download stuff from the web? The all use the internet but not the web. :)
For downloading stuff from the web I use wget.
For P2P file transfers then look no further than bittorrent.

I apologise. I did mean to say file-sharing applications, but I couldn't be bothered to edit my post :p

I find Kazaa Lite easily the best for music downloads although edonkey is good for movies.
Web downloads I do with DAP (Download Accelerator Pro).

i use kazaa lite so the RIAA cant track my ip address =PP
lane4, kazaa has some awesome movies, but if they're older or less popular it's really hard to get movies.. could you put up the edonkey site? is the service free?
thanks =)

Try either eDonkey (http://www.edonkey2000.com) or eMule (http://www.emule-project.net) - they do the same thing.
I'm using eMule Plus (http://www.emuleplus.tk) at the moment - it's another variation of the same thing.
Yes, as all good file sharing apps should be, these are all free :D

I use Kazaa at the mo, i used to use Audiogalaxy and before that i used Napster. I think Kazaa's good, but does anyone know of any other places where i can download music which is also free??
Just took swimmer up on the IMesh offer and must say it's pretty quality and user friendly + you can check out files on the gnuttela and edonkey networks which is always great!

Worth me breaking away from eMule?

Possibly, I'm finding it slightly harder to find the zip files I want though. Why don't you give it a try and then see?

can you use any of these behind a firewall?

Only if you can alter the settings of the firewall.
You need to open up the ports that the file sharers communicate through (which reduces the security of your pc .... kinda defeating the object of putting a firewall there in the first place!!!)
But ... yes you can use pretty much all of them behind a firewall. I'm hiding behind a software and hardware firewall :)
