8 golds would be almost impossible. Obviously Phelps has the best chance of anyone but realistically he would be relying on the USA team to win all three relays (assuming he gets in the medley - remember he got beaten by Ian Crocker over 100m fly in Barcelona!), then he still has to win 5 individual events. Pretty tough - would involve some 21 races in a week.

Perhaps he is planning to swim the freestyle leg of the medley relay????

He could realistically win 5 individual events but the hardest of the 8 will be the men's 4 x 200 relay where he will need to find 3 very good team mates from somewhere to beat the Aussies.

Maybe he is planning to swim the freestyle leg but he will have to prove he is the fastest. I don't think he's quite at the stage where he can pick which leg of the relay he swims! :p

It would possibly be better for USA if he does swim the free with Crocker on the fly. Add Krayzelburg and Moses and that is a difficult team to beat! He just has to beat the likes of Lezak over 100 free now....
