View Full Version : GB LC Manchester, 23-25 Apr. Who's going?

So who's going then? There will be at least one Surrey team trekking off to deepest, darkest Greater Manchester. Hotel booked, now I just have to decide what events to do.

Do I go for all the 50s and top up with an IM and a couple of longer free races, or do all the frees and add an IM? Being the all-rounder that I am, it's a tough choice. Decisions, decisions...

GF, the Barracudas will be there, Kaci, Chris and myself along with and old team mate who now lives in Bedford.
First time in a "big" pool, I will be like a "kid in a sweet shop"!

And by the way, this is post number 500!

Why will it hurt? It doesn't hurt the brain nearly as much, you only have to count half as many lengths so I reckon it MUST be easier! (Here speaks one who has never done 800 LC, but considering it for Manchester...)

Nah, not polo shirts - fleecy hats Chris, fleecy hats! We are going to be wearing our club polo shirts so a swimclub one wouldn't keep up with the team spirit stuff. (And fleecy hats are cheaper.)

Haven't booked anything yet, but I intend to be there. Going to Swansea this weekend to get more LC experience. I might even be able to get in a training session or 2 at a LC pool before the competition.

I shall be going! My hotel is booked and a days holiday has been booked from work. All I have to do now is sit down with my coach and decide  what I am going to swim!

Personally, I would prefer a hat or water bottle rather than a shirt!

Just thought this might be of use, if you want to look at what the competition is in your agegroup.

Attached is an Excel file, zipped to keep it small. To highlight all your club's swimmers, type in the club name in cells H1, H2 or H3. Your club name will be highlighted in the list. You can also add your favourite opposition clubs if you feel the need.

Similarly, up to three agegroups can be highlighted so you can see who you have to beat (either to get a medal or to not come last!)

You can also filter by event. Sorry, propeller took over on this one. That and a lot of boredom.

Yes as Bootie says I'm going. My best event is normally 200 Fly however I did further than 66 yards continuous last night, the furthest I have swum for 9 months so 200 Fly long course could be even harder than 800 Fc seeing as my arms don't come over very well after 100m. Oh well, should be interesting.

I will be there and hopefully it will not be a clean sweep of wooden spoons. The penultimate placing in my age group for at least one race is my goal for the weekend (I have a couple of other swimmers in my sights).

P.S. Manchester is not that deep and dark, it is quite good fun to be honest. :p

Just had a quick :read: at the start sheets for next weeks meet. It looks like several inhabitants of Guernsey are going to be in Heat 17 of the 400 meters this coming Saturday. Will the timing system be able to cope with  another triple dead heat?

Daydreamer, if you DO get a clean sweep of the non-metallic stirring implements you won't be alone. That's a pretty strong possibility for me, considering I have spent the day in bed, sadly not some delicious hunk of manhood but with some flu-like lurgy. I now have the nickname "diseased old hag" from my dearly beloved. What a charmer he is...

Londoner, I think you'll find that was a clever ruse on the part of the Beausie Three so they swim together. Should be some race!

Oh, and I'm working on getting video evidence of Chris and Bootie head-to-head in Guernsey into some kind of digital format so there will be proof, first, of the their existence, and second, that they can actually swim.

hmmmmm cheats! This isn't some sort of game you know! It is a serious event for some people and you three and just taking the mick! What did you all enter on? Was it a 4.55?

I reckon (kick-ass)Kaci will be the pace setter and probably win after a blistering last 100m. However, it will be a close race with Bootie though me thinks and as for Chris - I don't have a clue on how he'll do,
He could go fast
or maybe slow
Will he win?
He'll give it a go!

I hate spearheading every heat, it gives a swimmer an advantage just because they happen to be in the right place on the programme.

I do like this site though. If I hadn't followed the link I wouldn't have noticed you needed to re-register for the 1500 and 800. I now have the phone number and I'm prepared.

How is it any less an arbritary advantage than seeding across the pool?

:king: :speechles :king:

I think it is better to swim in spear headed heats because then you can sort of see how the rest of the race is spreading out but then again if you are next to the people with times near you then you can swim against them.

GettingFaster
19-04-2004, 02:27 PM
Being at the slower end of the swimming spectrum (by that read "off the scale") I prefer the slower heats at least to be unseeded. Particularly in longer races there is often a huge difference between swimmers in early heats so you end up racing against no-one, if the only person vaguely similar in time is in lane 1 and you're in lane 8. It's much less obvious of course for all 'proper' swimmers either in Masters, age-groups or open swimming (I mention this especially for you, lane4!) and that's the only reason why NOT to spearhead so I agree with Chris_lamb on that point.

As for really wanting to do the 800, I'll be lucky if I could swim 8 metres let alone 800. Seriously considering not even going if I feel as crap on Friday as I do at the mo. (Sniff.) And will I be banned if I take Lemsip?

As GF said the swimmers in the outside lanes are away from the swimmers with the next closest time. Seeding across the pool at least means you swim with one person approximately your speed.

In the final heat the fastest swimmer deserves to be treated better, having entered the fastest time.

GF, it's not just in the slow heats that this happens, also in the longer races. I suggest therefore that you stay clear of longer events like the 800 :-)

Back on the Lemsip question (well sort of) I remember seeing a site where you could type in the name of your medication and see if it was acceptable for your sport. I can't remember where it was, and although the ASA site has a PDF with lists of banned drugs that's not quite what I was after. Does the site I described sound familiar to anyone? (There might even have been a thread on this very subject last year some time but I'm pretty useless with the search on these boards.)

I was curious about cough and cold remedies out of interest, not that I thought I'd end up being tested (do they usually test last places?) because I seem to remember hearing the excuse that an over-the-counter medicine was the cause of a positive test. Can't remember who though.

One of several was the Scottish skier(Baxter?) at the the winter Olympics who bought the illegal U.S. version of Vicks nasal spray which is not made from the same ingredients as the legal British version.

A quick hello to everyone who's gonna be in Manchester this weekend.

Me and Kaci will be on the early morning flight to Manchester tomorrow.

As a special treat for one lucky (large) forum member, I have one x-large www.SwimClub.co.uk (http://www.SwimClub.co.uk) polo shirt to give free of charge to someone. It has been worn once (and subsequently washed  ) and is free to anyone who wants to meet me this weekend.

If you want to come and say hello, look for a Guildford City banner. Unless anyone wants to meet in the bar after the Saturday morning session?

Managed two pbs - one for the 800 free (only a pb because I've never done 800 long course before) and a 9 second pb in LC 200 IM. My trick? Steak and chips and a half of Guinness 20 minutes before the swim.
Great to meet (some of) the swimclub people - Chris, Kaci and Bootie, londoner62. John Tomlin, blueshots very briefly, adamlelean. Daydreamer, were you there?

Having seen some of the results on the ASA site, I presume GB records can only be achieved at Masters competitions. Does that mean if a 45 year old swimmer breaks a record in an open meet they cannot claim it. Only curious.

800m was sooo embarrasing cos i was wayyyy behind everyone in my heat. It was 9pm everyone had basically been there for about 12 hours and they were fed up and wanted to go home, so there's me plodding along in the last heat with everyone waiting to go home. Oh well, converted its the 2nd fastest time I've done so thats all good.

Altho afterwards a coach came up and vigourously shook my hand saying how well i had done, didn't believe him, but it was nice of him to say so.
