Crazy situation at round one gala. Four clubs had the official running order and two clubs including the host club had a totally different programme. The league apparently had sent different information to clubs. Gala was delayed by 20 mins while team lists were ammended. Never come across a situation like this before. :doctor: :doctor: required!

Were you at Waterlooville then?
Seemed so slow, especially as boards at shallow end had to be removed before all 4x25 relays and then put back afterwards - and nobody could hear any of the announcements either!
Didn't get home till nearly 11pm.

No at Cranleigh. Our gala was also slow becuase we only had one Ref and one Chief Timekeeper.

Sorry to hear that Taxi Service. Waterlooville are usually fairly good at running galas, although the sound system isn't the best (not really the clubs fault - more to do with the pool I think).

As for the turnboards, again that is a problem with 4x25m relays at a deck level pool. Unfortunately you can't expect the little ones to dfo 4x50m and equally you can't not have the turn boards for the individual races.

It didn't start till after 7, presumably because of the mixups with the programme, but since nobody could hear what was said on the PA system we didn't know the reasons/problems. Appreciated the lady carrying the board with up to date points scores - so I did get to write a few things down on my programme!
I know Woking had to rejig their team because they had a different order of events. The actual event running order was not the same as the one on the H&SC website.

Sorry if this is a dumb question...but what is a turnboard? We never have to remove anything for 4x25 relays here so I'm not quite sure what you're talking about

Waterlooville is deck-level. They have boards that are screwed to the end of the pool to give something above the water surface to turn on. Not easy to dive over for relays though!

Last night I was at the Rainbow Centre in Epsom, where they don't have any such thing - all they have is a tiled lip at the 'turning' end, which stands proud of the water level by approx 2-3 inches. I have never seen anything so dangerous for kids to do their turns - if you misjudge, and we are talking about 10 and 11 year olds, some of whom do not belong to clubs but take part in school swimming, you could easily hit your ankle or other on the proud lip and do some real damage. There were a number of what I would term 'close calls' last night.
Still, we are assured it has been passed as OK by the ASA, though I fear it will take one incident as described to focus people's minds on the danger.
By the way, the pool has only been open for 2 years, so there was a chance to ask for advice and get it right! :shocking:

I attempted the 800 in club champs at Epsom and DID a couple of turns as you described. And yes, it did hurt. The only good thing is that my turns are so slow it didn't do any damage but could well do to a young fast thing.

We have a bar at the water level in one of our pools and it's suprisingly easy to hit it or worse get your foot caught in it, especially if the lane is full and your doing long swims.

Now I understand.....I guess its just that the majority of our pools are built with gutters so the pool sits at least a few inches below the deck. that way the kids have something to grab when they turn. the little ones especially like to use the gutter to pull themselves up and get a breath!

Are we all going to have the correct programme this year?

Gulp now you have me worried but at this late hour I shall assume so!

We have teams at Fleet and Waterlooville but I havent had confirmation of gala times. I've assumed doors open at 6, warm up 6.15, start 6.30 - anyone know for certain please?
Good luck to all

I knew you were disappearing, Chris. Just wondered if any other Swimclub bods were going to be there tonight.

Bazza yep I was there but hadn't seen your note until today. Tough one for us and suprisingly I'd struggled to find U11 girls for this gala.
