This years British Winter Championships will be the most competitive yet, and the semi final format gives the top 16 swimmers in the 50 and 100m events a chance to impress, but what about the 200, and 400 etc.

Why isn't there a Semi or B final in these events?

I'm not sure why they don't have semis for the 200's or a 'B' Final for the 400. Meets in the States often run B and C finals. Maybe they don't think they have time? Maybe they think such races are not very competitive?
See you down there mate.
