It'd help if I posted in the right thread!
Results for day 1 and start lists for the whole thing are now available at http://www.swimming.org.au/meets_and_results/results.cfm?ObjectID=1214&FeaturedMeet=0.
Some good swimming to start the day, Julia Beckett is in the finals for the 100 back though she narrowly missed a place in the 400 free. Our boys in the 17-18 100 back didn't do so well with none of the three getting into the finals. Chris Alderton and James Clarke in the 16-yr 400 free get some finals places for the boys though, in 1st and 4th in the heats, though our own Tom Haffield didn't quite get there, with a 12th, quite a bit outside his Sheffield peformance. Steph Johnson's in the 200 fly finals, Francesca Halsall came a not surprising 1st in both the 50 free and 100 fly heats.
Dean Milwain and Daniel Ritchie are both there for the 400 free finals, Gemma Spofforth 1st in 100 back heats but Lewis Owens didn't do terribly well in his, finishing well down the field. Stacey Tadd took top slot in 200 IM heats, beating her Sheffield trials time and entry time - she must be pleased. Finals later today for both Stacey and Julie Gould who was 6th. Martin Handley and David Coombs were way ahead of the field in their 200 IM, finishing 1st and second. Liz Simmonds was joint 8th for the 100 free, so will there have to be a swim-off for the final place? Tom Haffield and Lewis Smith will be happier with their 400IM swims as they're in the final but Max Underhay didn't quite make it.
Finals results are coming in right now, so it's exciting 'watching' on the web. Julia Beckett finished 6th in 100 back in 1:05.73, just a touch under her heat time, and Chris Alderton came 4th in the 16-yr 400 free final; 4:02.97 slower than his heat time, and it looks like James Clarke didn't swim it. Wonder why.
Steph Johnson gets the first British medal, finishing 4th in the 15-yr 200 fly in a 2:17.63, .09 outside her recent Sheffield time.
I'm starving and really ought to go and get some lunch rather than checking swimming results!
Jetlag must be hard on these swimmers seeing as they've only been there a day or two, it looks like it's hitting some worse than others. All in all though a reasonable start to the event with the vast majority of our swimmers getting finals places. No doubt more good swimming to come. And now off to the canteen...

Just had a text from Julie's dad. He hasn't been able to get near her, but she looks really tired. I suppose jet lag will affect each of them differently, particularly as many of the swimmers won't have ever travelled across that many time zones before.
Here's the final medal haul from first day, I think I got everyone:
Steph Johnson, 15-yr 200 fly, 4th in 2:17.63.
Dean Milwain, 17/18-yr 400 free, 2nd in 3:56.43 (Dan Ritchie 5th, 4:02)
Gemma Spofforth, 16-yr 100 back, 1st in 1:03.49, nearly a second ahead of 2nd place.
Stacey Tadd, 15-yr 200 IM, 2nd in 2:18.84 (Julie Gould 5th, 2:22)
Martin Handley, 15-yr 200 IM, 1st in 2:10.41 (Dan Coombs DQ)
Francesca Halsall, 14-yr 100 fly, 1st in 1:01.78, 1.5 secs ahead of second place.
Liz Simmonds, 13-yr 100 free, 2nd in 59.81.
Not bad, eh?

I wouldn't be suprised if he was out there - when I was on a Welsh training camp in Swansea at Christmas he was talking about going. It's alright for some! ;)

with regards to james clarke, we are as confused as you, although he finished 4th in 400 free heat, only two 'visitors' are allowed to enter the final. david browne, 3rd in heat, (registered as queensland, australia) was apparently a
visitor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! EXPLAIN THAT ONE AS HE IS ALSO ON THE AUSTRALIAN WEBSITES AUSTRALIAN SWIMMER PROFILE LIST????????????????????
James will no doubt have been very dissappointed with his heat time against his performances at trials last week, where he took paul palmers 'old' 200 free long course british junior record having already broken the british junior short course 400 free record 3 weeks ago.

Just 'cos he's down as being form Queensland doesn't make him Australian necessarily, just that he swims for a queenslnad club and that's what would make him a guest. For example, Tara was down as swimming for Victoria at the Aussie champs the other week and has her own profile page on the Australian Swimming website, but last time I looked she was still British.
thank you for explaining that, the programme and results didn't clarify that as all other 'visitors' have been on the start lists and results lists in light print (like all the GB /NZ swimmers etc) and all australians in bold print, hence our confusion, david browne has been printed in bold letters on both.
Browne is a resident of the Netherlands, but like us has been here 3/4 years during which time he has swum for St Peters the whole time and has had clearance from the Netherlands to swim so swims under his club not country - in the same way we had to get clearance from Gsy ASA so never competed as brits, but as commercial club members (I also have an aussie profile, since 2002 so they aren't too picky about checking true nationality!! Plus, this being Oz, if anyone gets too good, they'll just offer you residency so you can compete for them anyway, a la Tatiana Gregoriova and all the rest!!)

I see that we have the top 4 positions in the girls 15 and under 400m IM - Steph Proud, Stacey Tadd, Julie Gould and Elizabeth Simmonds (4.58.41). What a shame that only the first 2 go in - I would love to see what Elizabeth Simmonds could have done in the final!
I also like the way there seems to be absolutely no mention of the Brits in the press release on the day's activities - as if they don't exist!
Katie

I saw that too Curly!! But I suppose it IS their National Championships, not theirs, and in the same way we slightly resented the Canadians for taking up our lanes in our finals last year, they may also feel slightly like that towards us! There was a bit of a mention about Fran Halsall in one of the press releases:
A strong Great Britain team produced some top swims on day one highlighted by the talented 14-year-old, Francesca Halsall who grabbed two gold in both the 100 metres butterfly (1:01.78) and 50 metres freestyle (26.15).

Another pretty good day for us Brits:
Dani Berry: 5th girls 15 yrs 100 free - 58.94
Martin Handley: 2nd boys 15 yrs 100 free - 52.99
Fran Halsall: 2nd girls 14 yrs 100 back - 1.04.29/5th 200 free - 2.05.85
Lizzie Simmonds: GOLD 13 yrs 400 free - 4.24.58 (3 seconds ahead!) / GOLD 13 yrs 200 IM - 2.20.19 (3 seconds ahead)... is there anything she can't do?
Julia Beckett: 4th girls 17 yrs 50 free - 27.01
Lewis Smith: 4th boys 16 years 200 IM - 2.10.15
Stacey Tadd: GOLD girls 15 years 200 brst - 2.33.51
Grace Callaghan: 3rd girls 15 years 200 brst - 2.37.74
Charlotte Wright: 8th girls 14 years 200 free - 2.09.88 (heat 2.06.94)
Michael Rock and Matt Edwards: JOINT GOLD boys 17-18 years 100 fly - 55.13
Chris Alderton: 2nd boys 16-18 1500 - 15.34.70
Daniel Richie: 8th boys 16-18 1500 - 15.56.01
They must all be sooo tired... some good photos on the podiums though if anyone's interested! :)

You missed a couple of medals from day 1. Although the 400 IM was swum as a 16-18 race they separate the medals into 16s and 17-18s. Thus, Lewis took silver and Thomas bronze in the 16s.
I think the team are doing incredibly well considering the travel and back to back almost week long meets. Depending on which group they were in, the swimmers arrived at either 2am or 3pm on Tuesday 13th and were all at the pool by 6:45am ready to warm-up on Wednesday morning. The total journey time was approximately 30 hours.
Some good medal prospects for tonight coming up and as well tomorrow.

YOu can find them at www.worldwidesportspics.com/asc/prints.php
I think that's right. Aussie swimming have had a few problems with the results over the last couple of days, but they're now up and there were plenty of great swims from the British team on these last days too... Lizzie Simmonds going 2.16 on her 200 back to get her 5th gold!!
