hi im new on this forum!
As i have just finished uni i have more time on my hands and not done any proper swimming for over ten years since i was a youngster when i swam for a local club. Anyway i want to get back into swimming a) to get my self fit again and b) to tone up my body (stomach, arms legs etc)!
Could someone please advise me on what strokes are best and duration and how many times a week is good for the body?
many thanks dean :)

Welcome to the forums, glad to have you. This is a pretty frequent request, and the answer is usually the same. Go to your local swimming pool and see if they have a swimming club. We can't see where you are as you haven't put any location info, but many swimming clubs have a Masters section and that sounds like a good place for you. You will usually get coaching to deal with your needs, be they fitness, speed, getting back into competing and there are loads of Masters meets where you would be made very welcome. Fill in a bit more on your profile and you might get more specific suggestions from someone in your area.

There's loads of swimming clubs around Manchester. Go to your nearest pool and have a look round for a noticeboard. Droysldon and Miles Platting both have clubs there as far as I know. Of course, Manchester Aquatics. Moss Side pool I think have a club. Stockport Metro are fairly active. I'm afraid I don't get outside the M60 much, so I can't help you much out your way.
If you're looking for kit I strongly recommend "just swim" on the A6 in Stockport town centre. No connection, just been in today, and was really impressed. The website is not fully up yet but is http://www.just-swim.co.uk
Swimming's boring, if you're looking for something that will interest you get into competitive Lifesaving! Many more things to do than swimming in a straight line doing one stroke! http://www.manchesterlifesaving.org.uk/ (although you've gotta be a student to join our squad - uni rules coz of funding)
Anything else I can help you with, PM me.
