Just received this link from a friend showing the design for the Beijing Olympic Swimming pool. It is supposed to resmeble a block of foaming bubbles! It's very attractive... if a little odd!!
http://www.danda.be/outdata/?dreview=120&category=
This is the plan anyway, but if it goes like Athens we might not get the bubble effect... (or the water, or the seating  )
I would love to go there, it looks so cool

Backstrokers might have something to say about the ceiling though!

Looks nice but... it does say that it requires technology that will be invented in the next 4 years! It will probably be completely impractical as well.

I think it looks incredible and I hope they do a good job and the concept works as well as they are suggesting! Certainly from the makers of the Sydney Aquatic Centre, the Guggenheim museum and Syndey OPera House, we can expect great things!

Saw this (http://www.china.org.cn/english/olympic/238261.htm) the other day and meant to post it then forgot.
Looks well weird all empty and with those bright lights shining but I bet it is fab in the flesh so to speak. I wonder how much natural light comes in through the "bubbles"?
This (http://www.china.org.cn/english/olympic/227668.htm) was the outside from October.

I've read that it's 13 metres deep.
It'll be hell at the Olympics, particularly for those swimmers who like to keep one foot on the bottom.

JL. I suspect that from the ceiling to the floor.
A Thirteen metre deep pool? 40+ foot deep pool? if you look at the man standing on the edge of what i guess would be the pool it's probably about 7 or 8 of himto the ceiling (Linnys link)

I agree with you. I too, thought it was pretty deep for a swimming pool. Take a look at what project manager Sun Hongzhuang says...

From the article above:
The swimming pool is 13 meters deep which assists maintain water temperatures, explained project manager Sun Hongzhuang. The pool temperature will be kept at 28 degrees Celsius which is the best suitable for swimmers, Sun said.
I hope they're not going to have it at 28 degrees for racing, that strikes me as too warm.

That doesn't look 13m deep. Following a black line 13m away wouldn't be much fun.

Now assuming thats the 10 metre diving board in the picture it gives somee perspective. So the ceiling is higher than thirteen metres. But I agree it looks like a normal pool.

No way is it 13m deep or the ceiling 13m high! Don't know where that came from. Looks immense though and nice to know it is finished well in advance unlike Athens (and no doubt London!).

Looks like an oversized alien pod.
I thought it would be 10 lanes not 8. I think it looks weird and I'm thinking it will look dated in a short time.

If you look at this picture:

It looks to be 10 lanes. I think Olympic pools must be 10 lanes - or certainly have at least 2.5m outside lanes 1 + 8 so effectively have 10 lanes.

That was my thought TS when I looked at the pages on the new Fina site yesterday. Another Leeds perhaps, or maybe it's not as bad because it's not straight lines running every which way but straight up and down.
Think it looks fab tho

I think it's a typo and they mean it's 3m deep.
As for temperature, it's within the FINA allowed range:
FR 2.11 Water Temperature shall be 25° - 28°.
I worked with the guy who led the structural design for the building when I was in Australia - if you look really, really carefully you'll see that the bubble pattern isn't random. And being 13m from deck level to the soffit of the roof is perfectly feasible (IIRC the roof itself is about 2 or 3m thick and spans about 80m across the pool hall).

This National Aquatics Center looks incredibles. I'm not expert at architectural disign but it seem very cool and it's true. The bubble pattern isn't random.
