Interesting report on how the Australians are planning their security here:

Possibility of armed guards, although John Howard has since said he hopes it won't come to that.

There was something strange on the bbc site yesterday.
I saw an article early in the day saying Matthew Pinsent had spoken out about fears for athlete safety and how the rowers may base themselves somewhere other than the athletes village.
Later on, there was an article where Matthew Pinsent was saying he is happy with the situation, etc.
I wonder if something he said was misconstrued or blown out of proportion and he was forced to clarify his position on the subject?

Sorry to sound so pessimistic about it, but should anybody really want to shoot at or bomb anybody at the Olympics, there is not a lot you can do to prevent it. The authorities can limit what might happen to a degree but cannot eliminate it completley, thats the reality.
Having lived in a fairly secure facility (and no I don't mean prison), it didn't stop the bomb scares coming in along with the disruption that this causes.

And Qantas will be on standby to whisk the Aussie team out of Greece should anything untoward happen. The moral? Don't book flights on Qantas for August, 'cos your plane might disappear to resuce Thorpe, Hackett et al! ;)

I agree with Bootie. Regrettably there is only so much that can be done to prevent attacks... anywhere. Attending something like the Olympics as a spectator is very much a personal choice in the current climate. At the end of the day, everyone can exercise vigilance but... Anyway, we're still going.
