Looking at the program, the mens 400IM qualifying time was very tough. 4.31 would have got 4th place based on the entries. I would be in a finals place with my PB

Breezer, are two guys from GB going to the championships? Once you get there, the likes of Hungary and Russia are so strong you get people just miiiiiles ahead. They're all so serious as well, it doesn't look like some of them know how to laugh! Just because you're at the competition to do a job, it doesn't mean you can't smile, or at least pretend to look happy. Good thing we're there to keep it happy!

That's pretty tough, I suppose the times are all decided based on however many GB points, but if the time's going to stop people who could be potential finallists and maybe even medallists I think they should look at it a bit more carefully. But I suppose you only have the year before's results for guidance, and it must be hard to know what everyone else is doing and how to get it right.

Well seeing the programme confirms the rumour i had heard that one of the selected swimmers had recently given up swimming. A great shame but of course there must have been a good reason to do so, although the timing must have caused problems for the team.

which swimmer are you talking about crawler?

The swimmer in question is Emma Wicks of Portsmouth Northsea. Shame.

I may post a general thread about giving up but don't want it to seem aimed at any individual so won't add anything here.

Results are at www.fpnatacao.pt

A fairly good start to day 1, Lorna Tonks is placed 5th after the semi-finals of 100 Free where she swam 57.66, Michael Rock and Matthew Edwards are placed 3rd & 4th= respectively after the semis of the 100 Fly, going 55.05,55.12.
Stephanie Johnson took GBs first 4th of the night in the 200 Fly final when she touched in 2.14.44, the winner Caterina Giacchetti from Italy in 2.09.92 a new Champ Record.
Christopher Watkinson finished 9th in the semis in the 100 Brs, so 1st reserve for tonights final, 1.04.27.
Julie Gould was 7th in the final of the 400IM in 4.54.93, however probably one of the best results of the night, Steph Proud and Lorna Smith have both qualified for tonights final in 1st and 6th places going 1.03.14 and 1.04.19 so that should make exciting swimming for those guys in Lisbon.
The 4x100 Freestyle team of Lewis Owens, Edward Denton, Andrew Hogdson and Dean Milwain were 5th in times of 51.78,51.10,52.23,51.72 in the final. But the best event of the evening was the first medal for the British team in the womens 4x200 Free of Steph Proud, Danielle Berry, Lorna Smith and Lorna Tonks in 2.02.61,2.03.62,2.03.43 and 2.05.54 to take the Bronze!

A good result for the first night, it can only now get better! :D

I just noticed looking thru the results, that a lot of the other countries relay tactics are quite interesting, they put their fastest swimmer in third place, for example Spain in the heats (2.07,2.10,2.02,2.08), why is that, can you create enough lead from the fastest swimmer going third when most other countries have their slowest in third and fastest in fourth?? I just found that quite interesting.

Looking at the results for today, the 1500 is wierd. There is no sign of Chris Alderton and Daniel Ritchie apparantly did 59.00.00!!

Looks like it was a flyer along with Lorna Tonks 50Free this morning, if you look at the reaction times, GBs is much quicker than anyone else. (It was Lorna Tonks, Victora Robinson, Claudia Powell and Lorna Smith)

Good Results last night,
:D Silver Medal for Matthew Edwards - 200 Fly, 2.00.12
:D Bronze Medal for Holie O'Connor - 50 Back, 30.12
:) 5th Place for Chris Alderton, 1500F Free, 15.35.70

However tonights finals should be good, Rachael Wilson and Yasmin Holmes both in the 100Brs, Scott Houston in the 100 Back and Justine Clark in the 100 Fly :D

wahay! the girls 4x100 medly relay fastest qualifiers by 3 seconds. It would be so good if tori came back with a gold after the team getting Dqd yesterday

I suspect the girls team will prob change for the finals, Steph Proud could do the Backstroke,Yasmin Holmes maybe on for the brs, Justine Clark might do the fly, and Lorna Tonks may do the Free. Of course I think you can only have two reserves, so the whole team can't change, but its a possibilty.

Where do you see that? Germany, Russia & Spain are all on 4.18 behind GBs 4.17.04!

Tori definitely did swim the heat of the 4 x 100 freestyle, I heard she split something like 57.6, although I'm not certain. I should think Mad4it's right about the medley final, although the freestyle swimmer may change if they choose to swim Lorna Tonks on breaststroke, as she does have the fastest time. I saw she was DQd in the 50 free which was a shame, presumably for twitching at the start as it's fairly difficult to get DQd in 50 free for anything but the start!! I should think the medley team will either be Proud/Holmes/Clark/Tonks or Proud/Tonks/Clark/Robinson, but I think the first one is more likely as Yasmin Holmes is swimming reallllllly well. :) Still, I hope Tori gets it. Do we think she gets a medal for swimming the heat, if they medal?

Katie
18-07-2004, 04:16 PM
Actually, I think Tori may swim the medley (with a different team arrangement!!) in the team of Proud/Holmes/Clark/Robinson. Although I'm not sure, I was told she recorded the fastest split in the freestyle relay, but it will depend on how the disqualification in the free team arose etc. :)

Justine Clark didn't swim the 100 fly final?!?!? She was going into it ranked 3rd!! I can only think that she must be ill, what a shame. :( She isn't swimming the relay either, the final order is Proud/Tonks/Johnson/Robinson (wahey!), although Rachael Wilson just recorded an incredible 1.10.9 to take the bronze in the 100 brst, so whether it will change AGAIN we don't know....

Do we think she gets a medal for swimming the heat, if they medal?
Yes I should think so, if they get a medal for heat swimming in the olympics then i should think at a European Champs it would be the same, however the heat swimmers wouldn't get on the podium.

Well I think its been an excellent championship for the GB Juniors, 11 medals in total is pretty good, ok so one less than John Atkinson's prediction however one above the average.
Some great performances :D
