This is driving me mad!!! Does anyone know whether 10 or 8 swimmers are allowed into finals? 2 of my friends are currently lying 10th! Massive PBs from another to place him 3rd in the heats of 2 events. Lets hope it's 10 to a final :)

some inpressive swims from day 1! 400 free girls: 12 yrs ceri unwin won by nearly 6 seconds- 4.25! lizzie simmonds 4.20, just under 3 secs clear. 12 year old ellen gandy- 1.03.49 100 fly!!! and 13 yr old jessica dickons 1.03.22!! sophie allen got silver in the 400 free then went on 2 take the 200 brst by 3 secs!! 2.43.72 (heat swim- 2.41.69), emily cryan 2.39 200 brst. no surprises in the girls 4x100 free team, lincoln vulcans took that, 4.05.89 in front of city of birmingham and beckenham. ellen gandy again, 58.69 split! hatfield won the boys relay by 3 seconds, 2nd were leatherhead (bet your pleased katie!) with plymouth leander in 3rd. cant wait till tommorrow now!

Wow the best swim of the night definately goes to Ellen Gandy in the 100fly-63 is outstanding! :D
The Lincoln Vulcans team was impressive, 59,60,66**,58 thats some speed for 11-13 yr olds. It will be interesting to see if they can win the 4x100 Medley as they all seem to be exceptional freestylers.
**edited, sorry!

sorry to point this out but the 3rd swimmer (only 11!) on the linclon vulcan team did a 66 not a 63 which makes the win even more impressive as this was the slowest split of all the relay swimmers in the whole race yet they still managed to win by over 2 seconds!! it wil be interesting to watch the medley relay as they certainly have 3 very strong swimmers, (simmonds 63 bk, allen 76 brst and tomlinson 58 free) it will be interesting to see who they put on the fly :p
Great swim from Ellen Gandy in the fly...add to that 58.69 anchoring the Free relay. Excellent stuff.

In the above report on British Swimming it states that Ellen Gandy broke the British Age Group Record and then minutes later Jessica Dickons went faster to take it. However Ellen Gandy is not 13 so how can she break a 13yr record in the first place?
Also, why is it half the heats are being swum in the morning and then the rest in the afternoon but yet still call it one session? Surely it would make sense to have, example, today Session Three (morning) Boys 400 Free,Girls 100 Free, Boys 100 Fly and then Session Four (afternoon) Girls 200 Back, Boys 200 Breast, Girls 200 IM. And then Finals in the evening.
(sorry if all this is really obvious, I think I'm having a confused day! :) )

Maybe it's the way the age thing works - she WILL be 13 after Nationals, as in at the end of this year - perhaps it's another one of those anomalies!

WOW! 2.22.6 for 200IM at 12 years old! Ellen Gandy is flying! This is outstanding swimming, Sophie Allen close behind in 2.24.5 another great swim from the Vulcans swimmer however even better Simmonds has just gone 2.20.48 with Jessica Dickons taking second in 2.22.75!
This is pretty amazing stuff, other highlights, Emily Key took the Girls 12yrs 100 Free in 59.34 followed by Gandy in 59.62. Simmonds took the 13yrs in 58.63 with team-mate Jordan Tomlinson taking Bronze in 59.95 to make it another successful night for the Lincoln Vulcans camp.
A great night also from Bolton Metro swimmer Ryan Bennett who won both the 13yrs 400 Free and 100 Fly in 4.17.56 and 62.02 respectively.

According to one of our coaches who's down there, a boy of 11 or 12 was a reserve for one of the finals today or yesterday, and waited his half an hour to see if anyone pulled out. Nobody did, so he presumed he was safe to leave. Someone pulled out of the final late, and as this boy had not withdrawn as a reserve, he has consequently been fined £20, his coach £70 AS WELL AS HE HAS BEEN BANNED FROM SWIMMING ANY FURTHER EVENTS THIS NATIONALS!!!!!!! OK, so presumably he should have pulled out as a reserve, but does that not seem incredibly pointless as he checked, and no one had pulled out of the final, thus giving him no reason to think he might swim the final??? I think this punishment is INCREDIBLY harsh, especially on a swimmer of this age! :(

Thats ridiculous! In the US if you are an alternate and leave the pool after the scratch deadline and no one has scratched, you aren't responsible to swim in the final. If the referee calls the alternate and he doesn't want to swim, that isn't his fault and so he should not be penalized. It is the late withdrawl that should be penalized...he is the one that should be banned from the meet.

Pull-outs are a curse.
Two years ago my daughter, then 12, was reserve for a final at AG nationals and went along to the evening session kitted out and prepared and warmed up. Our team manager made regular trips to the meet office to check for any pull-out, nothing. We left well into the finals session, but then a finalist dropped out minutes beforehand - I was told she had a sudden attack of nerves, but I can't confirm that. They put out a call, our team said sorry, she's gone. Second reserve, coached by a friend of ours at a club in our county, was still at the pool and they were offered it literally on the basis of get yourself to the start right now and you can swim, but wouldn't do it on that basis.
There was no sanction against my daughter or the second reserve, but thank goodness it wasn't the only opportunity either would have had to swim a national final. I don't think I have ever seen her as distressed as she was when she found out. I think the puller-out swam later in the meet, but I can't remember for sure.
At a meet in Swansea this season one entire team left on the afternoon of the last day for a long journey and numerous finalist lanes were left empty. I don't know if they neglected their responsibilities or the information just didn't get through, but IIRC one girl was left swimming a 400 free final in an outside lane with the next two lanes empty.

Its shocking pulling a swimmer out of the whole meet, in most cases its the team manager/coach/parents whose fault it is that the swimmer was not withdrawn or taken home thinking the event was full. What lesson are you teaching by ruining a swimmers chances and destroying their faith in swimming? Officials are at the meet because of the swimmers, what right have they got to be god to the future of a few athletes who leave thinking they haven't got a reserve swim.
Having said that personally if I was a reserve I would be in marshalling right before my final with the other 10 swimmers and wait until they had actually walked up the deck to race and I can't understand people who take their swimmers home before the event has even been swum and chance them missing another opportunity to race at National level however thats just my opinion.
In Scotland anyway you get a fine if you do not withdraw within 30 minutes of the finalists being announced (reserves included). Not sure about being withdrawn from other events tho, I don't think so but I think it depends on the reason why you withdrew from the final in the first place. But I'm pretty sure a reserve wouldn't get taken out of the whole meet.
Just noticed on the live results that the girls top club after day 2 was Lincoln Vulcans with a huge 283 over the next team (City of Leeds) which was like 144 (not sure of the exact points)!

Also, I'm sure this was one of this boy's first National Championships, and so to make a final would be a fantastic thing! As he bothered to wait his half an hour, he obviously wanted to have the chance to swim a final!!!

Well, we wouldn't do it again at Nationals - although you expect a more professional approach from the other club involved, one of the country's best although I don't propose to name it - but we left not long before the final and, as I said, with the team manager having been told several times no-one had pulled out - which, of course they hadn't.
Something similar happened at a WASA meet this season - she was promoted to second reserve after we had left for the afternoon, then when we returned for the finals session discovered she had been called up without knowing she was even a reserve. So she took the swim even though it meant consecutive races, and we timed it from feet touching poolside to the starting signal and it was 35 seconds.

Elizabeth Simmonds won three more gold medals and set two new British Age Group Records last night - wow! outstanding swimming in one evening! Gold one of the evening came in the 400m IM, 4:55.56 was a new British Age Group Record and 4 seconds ahead of Jessica Dickons 4:59.68. Bronze went to Emily Cryan (City of Leeds) in 5:07.24. Next was in the 100m backstroke,1:04.83. Second went to Lauren Collins, 1:06.27 and Georgia Davies, 1:07.06. Simmonds then went on to take her third gold of the evening in the 200m freestyle with yet another British Age Group Record, 2:04.67. Team-mate Jordan Tomlinson won silver, 2:07.21 ahead of Anna Hodt.
Ceri Unwin also had a great evening when she won the 12yrs 400 IM final, 4:59.09, an amazing achievement to go under 5mins. Ellen Gandy second, 5:05.57 and Vulcans swimmer Sophie Allen, 5:06.41. Ceri also took the 200m freestyle, 2:06.78 with Emily Key second, 2.10.07 and Sophien Allen third, 2.11.43. [Does anyone know why Ellen Gandy didn't do this final? She was lying first by quite a bit after the heats??]
Max Partridge did well too he won the 100 Breaststroke in a new British AG Record, 1.07.53. Also in the 13yrs age group Nova Centurion swimmer Freddy Avenell broke the British AG Record, 1.09.77
Ryan Bennett took his fourth gold of the meet in the 200m butterfly, 2:18.18.

for records is 13 and under and then only if you meet the standard set time.

Come come now, they will be taught how hard the rules are, and how much they care about all swimmers, especially the young ones. It is soo much easier to make the child pay for what may or may not have been his error - he will learn to love the officialdom that exists, and the rules, which have to be enforced regardless of whether or not they are utterly stupid. After all, rules are rules!!

Yes. Rules are rules.
What happens when rules aren't enforced to the letter? Someone protests and the rules have to be applied.
The laws/rules/promoters' conditions may wrong, but they are the conditions under which the competition is being run. If the rules are not applied to the letter then the organisers leave themselves open to accusations of acting unfairly.
If the rules are wrong, then make sure they are right for next time. Don't complain that the rules for this competition are applied.

Draconian and plain idiotic rules should, imho not be backed up by any sentient human being - while I am quite sure that the amount of bad press they have gotten over this one (and I was there hence I heard what a lot of people thought) will ensure that they make some sort of change, even if only for PR reasons, I am very doubtful that anyone would have complained if they had merely fined him and the club. To therafter ban the boy from further competition at this years' championships is purile and plain stupid, and quite honestly way over the top.
As for leaving yourself open to complaints, somehow I cannot envisage this stampede of people coming to complain and insisting this 11/12 year old was banned form all else for this year.
There is nothing more inspiring than a small-minded person who has found that they can wield a little bit of power, and do so without ever considering using a brain to think about 'flexibility' and plain 'common sense'.
The ROCK
03-08-2004, 07:16 AM
.....rules may be rules, and they may have to be enforced. The failure here however is that the marshall/official/organiser whom the individual in question spoke to when checking if a withdrawal had taken place should have been better educated with regard to the meet conditions....or just more vocal about them.
We cannot expect every youngster to know and fully understand all of the meet conditions when it comes to such protocols. Those running the meet on the day should however be able to communicate these when required.
This situation would have been avoided if whoever told the swimmer that there had been no withdrawals had then said... "if you are now going to leave you should still fill in one of these forms just in case someone has to pull out at the last minute. That way we'll know you're not available to swim."
I'm not saying that this is the fault of some volunteer giving freely of their time for the good of our sport, but somebody somewhere must be responsible for ensuring that those running the meet know the meet conditions, just as those officiating need understand the technical rules.

Absolutely - common sense is all it takes. It would avoid all bad press and upset swimmers. At the end of the day let us not forget it's all about British swimming and developing talent of the future. The outcome on this ocassion has not achieved that very simple objective.
Hopefully some lessons will be learned for the future.

Eh? Why would you need to nominate? Surely all the results of finals/or top10 in event would be scored 10-1 and then added up? BritishSwimming seem to be making everything way more complicated than required! A simple excel spreadsheet would have done.

Hey - I just wanna say well done to all the swimmers who took part in the BAGCats, the Youths and the main Nationals. Me and my elder brother both competed at our first nationals this year and made the final of our 50m freestyle events - it was a great experience and I hope to go back next year. But there were some amazing swims...and lots of new records, so well done!!!

Eh? Why would you need to nominate? Surely all the results of finals/or top10 in event would be scored 10-1 and then added up? BritishSwimming seem to be making everything way more complicated than required! A simple excel spreadsheet would have done.
The head coach of a club has to nominate which swimmers will score points for that club at the competition. You must nominate no less than 4 and no more than 12 swimmers. This prevents one swimmer wonder clubs getting a massively inflated position and also the huge teams with lots of good swimmers totally dominating. In addition, each swimmer can only score in one event per day (the day of the heats determining the scoring day). This means super talented multi-event swimmers cannot dominate one club's points score too much. Nomination forms must be submitted a few days before the start of the meet and cannot be changed half way through. Swimmers who have been nominated will score if they finish in the top 16 in their nominated event on a sliding scale from 35 points for 1st down to 1 point for 16th. The Trials meet, the National Age & Youth Champs and the Short Course Nationals are all scored this way and a total score from the 3 meets combined produced to determine the top overall club each year.
The process means that the top club result is determined not only by the results of the swimmers but also the skill of the coach in selecting the right events for each swimmer to score on. Further, only those clubs with coaches who care enough to undertake this process will score points. So you might win a sack full of medals but you won't make any impression on the top club scores if you haven't submitted your forms. A tough call perhaps but everyone knew the rules of the game beforehand so it is fair enough in my opinion. Club committees unhappy with their club's ranking at the meet should ask the coach about his/her nominations.

Oh right, I had no idea about the process, so is the Top Club Overall sheet on the website just from AG/Youths or is it Trials as well? Millfield seem to be waaay out in front! 763 to 487 is some margin!

Yes it was very detailed and easy to understand. Strange yes, but I can see the point of min. of 4 swimmers max. 12. And fair too as everyone does know the rules.
As a coach do you find it hard to decide which events to nominate your swimmers for? Perhaps for example you had a good backstroker who was also a strong contender in a 400 IM and say the 200BA and 400IM where in the same session, which one would you choose to nominate?

The ones on the website are just from AG/Youths.
Yes it can be a very difficult decision which event to go for. You just have to weigh up all the factors and go with the best scoring opportunity. Sometimes you get it wrong though, which is not nice!

Not far from Glasgow is the easiest way to describe it
REN 96 covers Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire local authorities. It is to the south west of Glasgow, centered around Paisley and Newton Mearns. An outstanding club, even if I say so myself!!

But do they face an uncertain future?

But do they face an uncertain future?
Are we talking abour REN 96 here, or the National Age Groups/Youths? REN 96 have an excellent future with Sandy Blackwood as coach. They will go from strength to strength.
The National championships too!

But do they face an uncertain future?
Perhaps you could clarify your staememnt in case i'm misunderstanding you, but........
I would have said the uncertain bit has been and gone, and looking over recent results it looks like they havent particularly suffered for it.
I'm sure Sandy will build on this strong position.

I was referring to REN96, and how they would cope with the loss of their coach! :)
It seems those in the know have little doubt that the club will continue to be strong for many years to come, sorry if I upset anyone!

Does anyone know the website for the official photographers at this years National Champs?
I can't seem to find it this year - I think it was SwimPix but would appreciate help!
