That's what you need to do when you've got TV stations from all round the world wanting to broadcast it. And when you've got to make sure everyone is in the right place at the right time for something like 35 sports!

Looking at Phelps' timetable it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. Guess that's why he's dropped the 200m back but it looks very doable:
Timetable to glory
Aug 14: 400m individual medley heats and final.
Aug 15: 200m freestyle heats and semi-final; 4x100m freestyle heats, final.
Aug 16: 200m freestyle final; 200m butterfly heats and semi-final.
Aug 17: 200m butterfly final; 4x200m freestyle heats and final.
Aug 18: 200m individual medley heats and semi-final.
Aug 19: 100m butterfly heats and semi-final; 200m individual medley final.
Aug 20: 100m butterfly final; 4x100m medley heats.
Aug 21: 4x100m medley final.
Bear in mind he won't swim the relay heats.

Phelp's timetable looks really busy...but I wouldn't doubt his capability of doing them all well. Do you reckon he'll be able to beat Spitz's record?

Most sober people say he will not. But it will be fun to watch him fail.
If he can win around 5 golds or medal in all his events it would still rate as an incredible accomplishment.

i dont think that it would be fun to watch him fail! i think that he deserves to succeed as he is clearly an incrediably talented swimmer

I mean if you look how much he has improved since the last Olympics when he was just a sort of 'unknown' finalist...to now when he's one of the people that everyone is talking about. I think he does have a chance of breaking Spitz's record, but it would be tough.
I had to do a talk in English once on who I thought was the greatest sports personality of all time, and I chose Mark Spitz, it was quite interesting...for me anyway!

i did one similar but it had to be an arguement so i did Mark Foster thinking he should go to the olympics. :P apparently he got a world record at 15?

Foster? Wow that's really good. I think Foster should have gone.

Still - I know it's the principle. But he could pull together a really good swim over there...he is our best 50m sprinter.

you say that he could pull together a really good swim but he didnt at trials or europeans so theres nothing to say that he would have performed well at the olympics either!

hes too old

also because he is a 50 swimmer he feels that he does not have 2 train reguarly and he only gets in the pool once every few weeks!

OK, it will be fun to watch him attempt the improbable. I'm saying it will be epic to watch him try to achieve it, even if he seems destined to fall short.
He is not in the mold of swimmers such as Thorpe, Klochkova, and Coughlin who at times seem afraid to fail and for that I salute Mr. Phelps. If he is a multiple medalist with some golds thrown in the mix then history won't remember him a failure.
hardly "failing"
Correct, It wouldn't be failing in the broad sense. He's made no secret of his desire to equal or surpass Spitz. On a pure numbers basis he will probably fail in that endeavour.

sorry no of course i dont think that he could have won the medal without training, oviously he does train reguarly for major competetions i am just saying that from what i have heard he only turns up at the pool now and again and spends most of his time in the gym.

A very vague post - 'now and again' could cover quite a range.
