Can I ask *another* naive question. One of the competitors on the olympics mentioned having a "swim down" to get rid of the "lactate". Anyone able to tell me what exactly that means?

Thanks :)

When the body respires anaerobically, without air, like in a race, the waste product lactic acid is produced. This makes the muscles feel tired, and sore, but can be at least part removed by swimming down, for around 800-100 meters at a reasonably slow pace.
