View Full Version : Advertising banners - yes or no?
Chris

In an attempt to get a small revenue from the site to cover ongoing costs I am considering the inclusion of advertising banners on the forums.
Before you start shouting "NO, NO, NO!" I can confirm that the following restrictions would apply:
1. No pop-ups (I hate them as much as you do);
2. On topic adverts - i.e. swim shops and other useful swimming-related advertisers.
Would do you think?
Comments and a vote in the poll please .....

Thanks Chris - voted!
I think it's a fine idea, with the provisos you've stated above!
On topic adverts are fine with me. :) :)

Yep, swimming ads fine by me.
Incidentally, anyone have any experience of ordering online from the US manufcturer Splishwear?

I would prefer not to have ads, but that is the same with ads everywhere :D
I don't think anyone can reasonably object to you trying to get back some of the costs of running the site.

I'm pretty sure Katie will be able to help you with that one...

I think the poll question is phrased badly as I don't really want any advertising. As pointed out though, relevant adverts are certainly fine. :)

YES!!!! Phil they are fantastic, we did a huge order from them earlier this year. They are great about delivery costs, extremely efficient and very accommodating when it comes to sending the parcels so they don't get stopped by customs (i.e. disguising them as gifts!) I would recommend you order about 1 size smaller than you'd usually wear as they come up quite big. I would say definitely go for it and the only bad thing about them is that when you've got one you just want to order another one! Tara and I both have them and they're great. :)

I say go for the ads. I'm all for something that helps a forum owner pay for their site expenses like that.

Own up, who clicked 'no'?!
And it's not a witch hunt.
I dont think any of us have a right to complain if you start displaying a few banners on the site to recoup some revenue. After all, we make use of the site at no expense to ourselves. Go for it!

Thanks, Katie. Have ordered one on a trial basis - skeleton ribs on the front and a skull and crossbones on the seat!
Thank you Chris, you know what I mean
Yeah banners are cool apart from the ones that flash at you loads of different colours and eventually really start to bug you, it would be a good idea if you could get them to blend into the site and not stick out like a sore thumb :clear:

I could live with ads as long as they are not too visibly imposing, just tucked away on the fringes would be ok and no pop-ups please!

Ok i fess it was I, but I was thinking at the time of the ad's that pop up all over the place and flash etc, thinking about it now some shall we say on topic and subtle ads would be ok.

Matt and L62, surely the point of adverts is to stand out as opposed to blend in?! :)

Fine by me, Chris.I agree about pop-ups though! Damned infuriating!
Yeh Bazza that is true but when I see an annoying advert that flashes super bright greens, reds and yellows I tend to ignore because they just look cheap and rather annoying.

Matt - ditto.
But I have no problems about the advertising. Go for it!

I've changed the title of the poll a little to make it clearer ....
I've also had to switch the Yes and No around so it made sense!!!!

Pop Ups are a thing of the past. I now use Mozilla as my Browser instead of IE, there is a facility within it to block pop ups. I find it very effective.
I could cope with ads on the site Chris

.....because it looks like the majority are saying/have said NO

No that they don't mind having ads. Chris changed the question a while back. With having 67 for ads and only 8 against I would have thought that was a high enough percentage?!

I don't really want to go down that road guys .... just wanted to test public opinion on the subject.
Now if I could get Swimrite/Allensswimwear/Mailsports to sponsor the forums ..... ;)

Yes, why not. Someone takes time to provide this for us. Its time consuming and the servers cost money. The sites that we would be directed to would be swimming related & if you don't want to use them you don't have too
Would do you think?
Eh?

Yeh thanks for bringing that up just over 2 months later Matt. Very productive!
Well I didn't bother reading it and then I saw it on the front page.

I think that advertising should be allowed, then one could say advertise the Surrey Masters Champs in June and then remind the Surrey Masters to get their entries in sooner than later

Spidey, I swear that you're so determined to advertise this I may even have to move to Surrey! :king: (Only for a day or two, though!)

Well, maybe I am, if advertising banners were allowed, I would not need to keep placing reminders in my postings. Wondering why is the percentage of No's higher than the Yes's?

Because the question is would you MIND having advertisements, and most people have said no, they wouldn't mind. :)
