Hi,

Big race 3 weeks on Sat at National Masters and I pick up a mouth infection due to a wisdom tooth. I am on anti biotics till Friday but have went for easy swims in training on Monday and Tonight, cutting down from my usual 5 hard sessions a week but trying to keep my hand in without getting too tired. For easy sessions I have felt heavy and slow, not surprising. Going to rest for the next couple of days and see how things are at the weekend.

My taper is due to start a week Monday(ish) what should I now do, have an extended taper or try and train hard next week and risk getting more tired?

Do not want to waste a years training!!

Let me know your thoughts.

Taper??!! Wow, you sound like you actually know what you're doing at this game! My tapering normally starts during the long car journey from Surrey to Sheffield.

If you've tailored your training specifically for this meet, and have been training hard all year, I very much doubt that this minor hicup will set you back too far. If I were you, I would concentrate on geting yourself better, then get back in the water and train as usual but reduce the intensity in the last week or so.

Hope you feel better soon. :doctor:

Blimey! Coincidences! Exactly same problem but decidely less training done this year even if I am mad enough to do 400IM at Sheffield. Probably somewhat lower expectations too on my part. Have kept off antibiotics on the basis that they might solve the problem but make you feel crap in the process. In addition being married to a (medical) doctor means that antibiotics are only dispensed in direst cases in our house!

I am sure someone may wish to compare and contrast our two approaches for Sheffield. I have not trained this week due to feeling fairly rough Monday/weds but mainly to make sure I am fit for the Aer Lingus Open Masters this weekend. I am relying on the medicinal powers of Arthur Guinness' finest and the silliness of a GCSC weekend away to do what the anitbiotics won't.

But seriously (me?) though, if I had done as much training as you allude to then at this stage its all in the mind as far as I see it. You need to work on the basis that the dodgy tooth will sort itself and keep thinking positive from now to all the way up the M1. Maybe even a bit of weights and so on might be easier to do if you feel lousy in the water yet?

Hope it clears up soon though.

Til Sheffield but watch these spaces on Monday for further silliness.

Thanks for the light hearted responses! I have trained very hard for this event but I will also not be taking things too seriously and will be partaking in the consumption of a large amount of beer on the Saturday night along with all you can eat Chinese....no matter how I swim!! ;)

It is getting better now but I think I might need another dose of antibiotics. Swimming in Speedo League this weekend so will see how that goes, should be a good gauge, and thankfully I only made the relay team! :p
