...It's good to see a bunch of swimmers from the South and especially London. :)
There aren't that many from the south, even fewer boys than girls. Any suggestions why?
I remember when I went in 2000 and I was the only person from London! I think there were 4 of us from the South (all girls) - and I didn't know any of them :(
Someone mentioned that the water up north is harder than down south so maybe they have to work harder in training?! Joking. I think this has been mentioned before and I reckon its to do with cost of pools etc. I pay around Ģ450 for upto 12 hours of swimming time and an hour of gym, thats after being helped by the council too!

Readers should note that 21% of the team hail from Scotland, clearly a larger percentage than one should expect in terms of relative population - an indication of the higher standard of coaching up here perhaps? ;) :p

Scotland, as far as I know have a decent junior structure which does not exist in England. camps for juniors and youths, with obtainable squad times which are there for all to see. This culminating in sending a team to the commonwealth Youth Championships where England did'nt even bother. this attitude gives hope to a large amount of swimmers which simply does not exist south of the border.

And before anyone has a go about threads being hijacked, I'm very sorry. And I reckon someone else could possibly be being a little less than modest in praise of Scottish coaching, eh, Mr 2+2? Well done for your swimmer, I bet you're very proud of their achievement.

Well done Yip Yip!! When I went in 2002 it was outdoors in Austria, and a little bit dodgy with the weather every now and then, but stil reeeeeeeally good! :)
2 of the boys on the EJ team will have had some recent outdoor pool training and competition experience when they depart with the Senior National Event Camp - Men's 200m freestyle team to Phoenix, Arizona on 8th May and then competing at the 2005 Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine, California, returning on 30th May.
Also, many of the girls have trained and competed outdoors on various camps during this season.

21% from Scotland if you round it up! :p
There are quite alot from the south actually - out of 29 swimmers I make it 7/8 from southern counties (are Maxwell in southern counties?) and 4 from the south west. So if you take out the 6 from Scotland that only leaves 11 from the midlands and the north!

It looks like lots of successful qualifiers, some scraping in to semis in 16th but getting another swim.
I see that Lewis Smith qualified 4th in 400IM and Hannah Miley looks strong in the 400IM. Good 200 Fly swims so a promising start - medals shown against first 3 qualifiers confused me somewhat!

Fantastic swim from Hannah Miley there - I don't think they officially keep British Junior Records any more but she beat Sarah Hardcastle's time from 1984 by 4 seconds!! Which means of course Stacey Tadd also deserves a mention for being two seconds under that old time as well. Top swimming from Thomas Haffield too - maybe the 400 IM could become a bit more of an event for us after many barren years.
Elsewhere I noticed a couple of very impressive 1:49s in the mens 200 free including one from Portugal (!) and a German lad splitting 48 in the relay - the Swedish team must be kicking themselves after winning by nearly a second and getting DQd for a flyer.

It looks as though qualifying for EJC could only take place at the World LC trials with no reference to the stage 3 meet as a safeguard.
If so this is a shame as the qualifying time he needed was 4.00.26 and at the stage 3 meet he did 3.59.09 (but only 4.02.?? at the trials).
Why the difference in chances given to our swimmers I wonder?

Probably not a good idea having people trying to make the team only 5 weeks before the event.
On that tack does anyone have any thoughts on swimming SASA's, EJ's then Nat youths/commy trials in quick succession. I don't see how anyone could peak for all three or taper between. I for one will be watching how those swimmers perform by the time they get to Sheffield.

This was brought up recently at one of the British swimming Roadshows - why can't EJC & EYOF athletes qualify at Stage 3 as the Seniors do, particularly if they were ill, injured or just out of sorts at the Trials. Look at Beckerleg for the 400 Free at the EYOF and Clarke for the 400 Free at the EJC's as well (particularly with a 1:52 in the heats of the 800 relay)
The answer was that there were just no plans to bring this in for the juniors. Shame really - it may have cost us medals at both meets
Very good swims from the GB juniors, maybe some of the swimmers picked for relays should have been allowed to swim individual events if they had reached the qualifying times at the Stage 3 meet.
That German bloke did a 22.26 in the 50 freestyle (faster than Foster!)
And the 800m final had a very close top 4. Jordan Tomlinson was 0.2 outside 3rd place.

yes a very gd swim. also mentioned frans swim was also a fantastic time.
the question i ask is : were all the top gb swimmers as good as this at such a young age?
are we working swimmers too hard too young(burnout, like has been seen with one young athletic star,?) or have we got a new generation of superstars of the future? IF THEY KEPP PROCEEDING LIKE THIS THE 2008 AND 2012 OLYMPICS SHOULD BE A FIELD DAY FOR TEAM GB!!

Well that's the million dollar question. I think the young swimmers work harder (ie train more) these days which is one reason why they are doing so well at 15/16. The question is will this really translate into more success on the Olympic podium which is all that counts remember. ;)

IMHO the big thing is having 2012 in London. That will make it worth some of the current top teenagers dedicating the next seven years to. But you do fear for those who will be encouraged to do this and don't quite make it, or find someone pulls a British passport out at the last minute and nicks a place.

Some of you may have picked this up from the splits but did you notice that in the men's 400 IM final, the Hungarian lad who came 2nd (Gergoe Kis) split 56.60 for the freestyle leg. To me that is simply an incredible split and I am wondering if it is the fastest ever last 100 of a 400 IM at any level. Fairly sure that Phelps doesn't back end that quick, although I haven'y checked it up yet. Does anyone know if 56.60 is the fastest ever?
By the way, Kis won the 200 fly in 1:59 tonight and then was back in the water within 20 minutes to pick up silver in the 1500. Impressive stuff again from him.
Yeah that is probably one of the fastest. When Phelps set his world record in Athens, he split 57.90 for the freestyle.

The 1500m mens winner swimming 15.06 and winning by 20 secs had caught my eye.
As far as splits GBR splits Rachel George's 4x200 time of 2.02.77 looks really good, and Robbie Renwick had a good back end in getting his silver in the 400 Free.
