All swimmers would like to improve their times by 2-3 seconds. Unfortunately there is no easy way to do this. What you must do is ensure that your stroke technique is as sound as possible and does not break down under pressure. Working on your start, turns and finish is very important. You also need to look at how you are splitting your race. I don't know what time you do but I bet you go out fast and die. If for example you want to do a 1:10 for 100m backstroke then your splits should look something like this: First 50m 34.75 - 2nd 50m 35.25. Front crawl splits for 1:10 would be 34.0 - 36.0 because of the dive.

I agree, once you reach a plateau in your times you really need to tighten up on the basic if you are going to improve.

Working the fly kicks underwater; concentrating on keeping your stroke long towards the end of the race, it all helps!

Most important is to talk to your coach, tell them that you want help!
