As a young inexperienced coach, at a club that currently has similar problems to those mentioned on these threads, I'd be interested to hear what people consider to be interesting sets (esp. swimmers).

I have swimmers that moan whenever drills or kicking sets are mentioned, and positively relish half an hour of 400m. Similarly, there are also the complete opposite who hate the 400s and would rather do the drills.

What do you/your swimmers enjoy?

I like:

Sets of 4x25 I.M.
Breaststroke kick (lots of it!!)
Front Crawl pull

I'm not a big fan of long distance sets (but then my size doesn't make them very easy!), sets of 30 100's free bore me to tears.

I think variety is very important - I've been training for 16 or 17 years now and not unsurprisingly it's very rare to get an original session any more!!

I hate doing drills within a specific time. I always have to rush them and then choose the fastest less productive drill. I like to settle in to a drill and then progress to full stroke. I hate the feeling of the set being a total waste of time! In actual fact I hate any of my swimming (even the easy bits) being a waste of time!

Long sets are 'meaty' but then again I'm not a sprinter! When you really get into a set cos you're feeling so good there is a great 'high' feeling. But its a bummer if it feels bad. Best to stop and change tactics otherwise a waste of time.
