Hi all,
I have read your interesting comments about what is your best pool...now question:
If you were going to combine a holiday (sun, sea, surfing maybe...??) at the end of September, for a week, with your first love i.e. swimming, where in the world would you go ?
Another way to put it: where in the world is there a very nice pool in a fantastic location...?
...I guess Australia is in the TOP 10....but it seems too far for a week....
Thank you for your comments... :)
V.
Barcelona maybe? I'm not sure about the weather (I would imagine it would be quite good) but I know the pool is huge.

Great question Vincent. Are you looking for a proper pool first and foremost...or a fantastic location in which the pool would still be good enough to keep training?

hummm....I don't know actually...?
I guess a nice location would be a priority....with a decent swimming pool.
It looks like Barcelona can be in the list !

Does it have to have defined lanes with lane ropes? How far are you prepared to travel? I'm just going through all of my favourite pools in beautiful places and wondering about your criteria. :)

You seem to have THE answer to my request ! :)
I was considering the US, so I am ready to travel a fair bit...
As far as the pool is concerned...something like the one in Barcelona is ideal...50m pool would be preferable, so when I come back, swimming SC will seem very easy :)

None of mine are 50m Vincent, and most of them don't have lane ropes. They're pools where I could quite happily swim for hours and were never crowded. Mombasa, Singapore and Skopelos in the Sporades. Not even all 25m, so maybe I got the wrong idea. ;)

Immediate thought is Morzine up in the French Alps. By all accounts an amazing winter sports centre but pretty damn good in summer too. I think one of the swim-courses organisations offers it for clubs. Open air 50 m pool, laned off too at times each day. Went there last year for family holiday but could easily do a swimming-centred holiday there too - so much else to do, walk bike paragliding (yes yes yes!)

If you can drive and don't mind renting a car (it's a hike from Miami airport):
Islamorada in the Florida Keys. 50 meter outdoor pool, might be possible to hook up with the local masters team for a week (head coach is an Olympic Gold medalist who also coaches for Gary Hall's Race Club) pool fee is $3 per session for guests at local hotels. I'm not sure how the surfing is, but great diving, snorkeling, and sport fishing.
If you need to take taxis:
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Pool complex at the Hall of Fame is a block back from the beach. Two 50M pools available for public use a good amount of the day. Ocean water temperatures in the low to mid 80F range. Surfing isn't bad. Number of hotels within walking distance of pools and beach.

I know it's Australia, but I really wanted to post these picture of pools in Oz ...
The first is of the competition pool in Brisbane - Chandler Aquatic Centre. It was 10 lane by 50m with the swim down pool being 25m wide and diving blocks at both sides. Swam rubbish there though!
Second picture is of the pool we trained in. It was a school pool and there was so much space! 10 by 50m again. Blocks could be put either at the end (for 50m swimming) or down the sides (for 25m training). Perfect.

How about Egypt? The Hyatt Regency in the Red Sea resort of Taba is a 5 star hotel with several large free form pools plus a 50 metre pool!! Great hotel, fantastic weather and a 50 metre pool - may suit your requirements.

Have a look at SwimTrek http://www.swimtrek.com/. I went on the Lakes Weekender this year with three friends and I think that it is the best holiday I have ever had. As a result I have booked to go to the Greek Cyclades and to do the Lakes Weekender (this time 6 of us are going) in 2006. I've found all the staff at SwimTrek very helpful.

Sharks in the Greek Cyclades???
er, yes actually. I too believed that there are no dangerous beasties in the Med until I encountered what appeared to be a very large shark whilst sailing a catamaran off Ithaca. I wasn't able (or inclined to..) park my 18' boat alongside and whip out a tape measure, but it looked as long as the boat. My crew panicked and I headed for shore. OK, I might have been a bit unnerved too.
2 years later I saw a programme about the under reported shark population in the Med. Apparantly great whites breed near the tuna nurseries off Sicily and have been seen there. There was also footage of one in the Adriatic.
But if you have been watching the Shark programme on C5 this week, you will know that if you encounter one whilst swimming, all you have to do is swim towards it, look it in the eye (they don't like that) and poke it in the gills, or if you can't reach because it has you in a toothy cuddle, poke it in the eye...

Isn't Ithaca in the Ionian sea on the Adriatic side, not among the Cyclades?
Whatever, shark attacks extremely rare in Med, and prevalence of biters v.low in Aegean

........but you never know when Jaws might be lurking.
Very cool to see a big shark out boating. My scuba diving friends pay thousands for the chance to see big fish but generally the best they get is to cuddle a little nurse shark!

You can do so much there all year round. The pool opens from June to December I recall. The swim course I did was with Mrs A and a few from your club went. Here is me in the air and looking down at the town. The 8 lane 50m pool is seen to the centre right.

The resident Maitre-nageur and organiser of the Morzine facility is Michel Guillemin.
I'm in regular dialogue will him about age adjusting, and I'll see him later this month. If anyone wishes to contact him by email, let me know.

Suprised no one has mentioned Bondi Beach yet! Well I know it was out of the criteria as it is in Australia those of you who get the swimming times will know about it as it was in Febuary's Issue in the letters section a really good photo (wasnt me though if only) lol.
