has anyone swum anywhere weird?
When I was young I was at a camping trip and I wantd to be brave. So by myself went into the river that ran past. I thought I was having an amazing time as there was even nice foamy white clouds on the water (tinged with brown) which I played in and dived through and threw about with my hands.

Sydney Harbour - does that count as weird?
Back in the sixties I swam in a gala at an outside pool. I was only swimming relays but the pool was 100 yards long. I also swam in a gala at the old Butlins pool at Bognor Regis. There was a wall in the pool sticking up in the middle and planks of wood were put down to get across to dive in for relays. The stuffed parrots hanging from the ceiling always looked precarious and we were always waiting for one to fall in. No lane ropes either. Castle Street Baths in Guildford was interesting; 20 yards long, four lanes wide but I say 20 yards as it was 9 inches longer one side. I always tried to get lane 1 as 9 inches over 5 lengths. Perhaps we should start using facilities like this again. ;)

The older pools are quite funny to see in pictures. Mind you some of the lido type ones looked pretty good, but not exactly laned off for serious people. In a resort once, and i'm not going to name drop it as it seems so corny, there was pingpong type balls covering the top of the pool to try and keep it warm. Didn't really. Pool was also covered in huge black beetles and I still swam, trying to avoid the two lovebird types in the corner - yuk, worse than the bugs.

That Castle street baths brings back memories, 3 diving boards in pyramid formation into about 6 feet of water. The old metal steps in the deep end had a bigger gap under the bottom step that you could just squeeze under, I shudder to think of that now. And the freezer where you put your clothes was only for the very hardy.
