About ten years ago I was a very good swimmer. I used to train with my school and entered many galas.

Then I stopped going and have become very unfit and am slightly overweight.

I want to get back into swimming but would like some advice on to get the most out of my time in the pool. For example, how often should I go, which stroke is the best to use to tone up and how many lengths/how long should I swim for.

I can't wait to get back into the water!!!

I recently started swimming again after 5 years out of the water. Initially I went swimming in public sessions for a bit until I felt that I had got some fitness back and was getting held up by the general public. I think I was doing about 1500m in 40 minutes.

Then I joined my local club, which fortunately had a squad aimed almost directly at people like me, and now, 8 months down th line I'm still going, training 4 times a week and preparing for my first county championships for nearly 7 years.

It's great, I'm sure you will enjoy being back in the water; I'm finding it at least as enjoyable as I did as a teenager, although no less painful!
