If we are talking worldwide there can only be one answer - Mark Spitz's 7 golds in one Olympics (albeit 3 in team races) will never be repeated - all in world records too.

If we are talking just GB an old git like me can remember Brian Brinkley at the Nationals in 1975 winning the 400 IM in a GB record and then 30 mins later breaking Bob McGregor's 11 year-old 100m freestyle record. Can't recall any other GB swimmer with such versatility.

Have to agree, no one can beat Spitz, bearing in mind that that in those days there was no financial reward, in fact swimmers today can thank Spitz for all those millions of posters of him and his medals that we have seen since his feat.

Mark Spitz - I remember him! Made an impression even on somebody who (then) had no interest in swimming. I doubt what he did will ever be beaten. But Ian Thorpe has to be something special now. Just incredible.
