How do you get swimmers to increase their swimming rate? We have several young swimmers who have very good basic fly strokes but they are just too slow and don't seem to be able to increase their stroke rate - like a record stuck in a groove (for those of you who remember vinyl!).

That's a good point. What distances are they normally doing for their fly? Maybe you could give them more, shorter, faster swims. Even half lengths!

and u have to keep it fun, coz if they dont enjoy fly they'll do freestyle instead of it, some of my friends were taught when they get tired during a fly set to do freestyle that ist the answer

My Fly swimmers when doing number 1 stroke revert to single arm fly or freestyle when the stroke starts to break down; even if this is after 10 strokes. The quality of the stroke is very important to Fly swimmers who become very fatigued on constant fullstroke work. Then they start agian until stroke breakdown. I also find that using fins is great for sustaining better technique over longer distances.

Looking forward to hearing from fellow coaches and keen swimmers needing help.
what are they doing under the water, straight arm pull or s shape or key hole?
age and abilty/strengh matters but not so much as technique, which is what happens under the water unlike style which is what happens over the water, any more help needed feel free to contact me be email.
what kind of under water arm action are you using ie, straight v straight s or key hole wide or tight. age or abilty doesn't really matter but strengh does, so go easy on the meters at first with only 10 to 15 mts full 25 when strenght permits, remember technique matters more than style, technique is waht happens under the water, style is all that happens above. i hope this is helpful to you and feel free to ask for more help if needed.

Thanks. My swimmers are only doing short 1 length repeats with a lot of work with fins. I'll keep it this way until they get stronger and technique gets better. I'll also watch the underwater technique a lot more. One of the big problems is a weak kick and too much arm work to compensate. Is it best to concentrate on building up kick strength first, before worrying about technique?

my no1 is fly,and my faveourite and best event is the 200m. i do a lot of fly in trainning and i keep up with the people doing f/c fine (eg on a set of 10x200 on 3.00) lc or sc i can be onfront of many of the frontcrawlers who r the same pace as me on f/c, so i am strong, but when it comes to shorter distances, i cant move my arms fast enough - my stroke is apparntly too long and deep and i go up to far. andy one got any tips on how i can improve this?
