What is the logic in * all the non welsh swimmers. It just draws attention to the fact that, with a few exceptions, Wales are not very good.

Hope everyone has/had a good stage 2 meet!

Well to be fair they didn't say the Scottish squad only "Scottish swimmers" so they are technically correct in what they said :)

Do other Commonwealth countries have conditions about qualifying - not the qualifying times but having to compete in certain events (eg Stage 1, Stage 2) which had no bearing as such on selection (i.e. it didn't matter which events you swam or how well or badly you did)? Also what will happen if someone qualified in Swansea but hadn't done Stage 1 (or 2) - do you think they would be excluded?

The stage 3 results have been extremely underwhelming so far. England's games team is looking very thin on the ground.

Just how many swimmers have qualified for England thus far?

The only certain qualifiers are surely those who swam the A time at the trials and who have continued to do what was set out in the selection policy document – these being –

Liam Tancock 50 back
Chris Cooke 50 and 100 breast
Rebecca Cooke 800 free
Jo Jackson 400 free

Other potential qualifiers that I can see for individual events include (and I know some of you will have done this too and I haven’t studied it so could have made mistakes – please feel free to correct if necessary) –

Fran Halsall 100 free
Mel Marshall 100 free/200 free/100 back
Katy Sexton 50 back/100 back/ 200 back
Lisa Chapman 50 free
Mark Foster 50 free/50 fly
Ros Brett 50 fly
Terri Dunning 50 fly/100 fly/200 fly
Kate Haywood 50 breast/100 breast
(Liam Tancock 100 back)
Matt Clay 50 back
Ross Davenport 200 free
James Gibson 50 breast/100 breast
(Rebecca Cooke 400 free)
Keri Anne Payne 800 free
Darren Mew 50 breast/100 breast

Adam Whitehead made the C time for the 50 breast but I think from reading the selection policy that he would lose out to the other 3 50 breast qualifiers shown above.

Crawler worked out who would qualify for relays on another thread as –

4x100 Free= Mel Marshall, Francesca Halshall, Lisa Chapman, Ros Brett
4x200 Free=Mel Marshall,Jo Jackson,Kate Richardson, Julia Beckett
4x100 Med=Katy Sexton, Kate Haywood, Terri Dunning,Mel Marshall

4x100 Free=Simon Burnett,Chris Cozens,Anthony Howard,Ross Davenport
4x200 Free=Simon Burnett, Ross Davenport,Dean Milwain,Alex Scotcher
4x100 Med=Liam Tancock,Chris Cook,Michael Rock,Simon BurnettPerhaps he might like to rework these, to work out who else might be going, are the men still fast enough for relays if Simon Burnett is indeed ineligible?

I wonder if the Head Coach would consider the 400IM exceptional circumstances for Rebecca Cooke. On paper it looks like she stands a better chance of a medal in this event (despite failing to make the qualifying time) than in the 400 free but I dunno if the timing would clash with her 800 free.

Does anyone know what's happened to Gemma Spofforth? She is still swimming but to nothing near what she was a year ago. She won two titles at the World trials in march 05, but didn't do well at Commonwealth trials in august or Swamsea this weekend.

I presume that because Lisa Chapman has retired, some-one else will fill the spot for the 4 x 100 free relay if they still make the QT.

Gemma is still swimming, I think everyone goes through ups and downs, and she will definitely be back.

James Goddard has apparently quit... don't know if this has been mentioned on another thread. Stage 3 was a strange meet, quite enjoyed it but it was slightly lacking in atmosphere. Swansea's a nice pool though, reminds me a bit of Tollcross for some reason.

The Loughborough crew seemed to think Amy Smith was going as well? For the 4 x 100 relay? Probably in place of Chapman. :)

That was my thinking too, so glad my sums were right.
Well done Amy:king:

I think anyone who made the C time goes unless the total number including relay teams will exceed 35 (I think it's 35), or 3 other swimmers have made faster times as appears to be the case for the unfortunate Mr Whitehead.

So I would imagine that means everyone Linny mentioned will be on the team with the exception of Lisa Chapman who has retired.

Let's hope it's speculation, he is such a talent, and still young.

It seems to be pretty certain!
Writing on Swimnews (http://www.swimnews.com/News/displayStory.jhtml?id=4015) Craig Lord said this, which made me think more that James had taken a year out. I hope he hasn't given it away, but of course we have to respect his decision if he has.

James Goddard, 200m backstroke champion in 2002 and Commonwealth record holder, missed trials in Swansea, after having taken a year out of mainstream training, and will not defend his crown in Melbourne. Goddard, coached by Sean Kelly, at Stockport, has not returned to a consistent long-term training programme since finishing fourth over 200m at the Olympic Games in Athens.

Ah yes, I missed an opportunity to rant!!!

I know it was the Welsh Nationals and all, but I thought it was pretty mean than Ellen Gandy got chucked out of the 200 fly final. Not Bethan Coole's fault (someone said she didn't even want to swim the final, her coach wanted her to do it), just the way it worked out. But there was actually a chance than Ellen could have made the Commonwealth time for the 200 fly, albeit a small-ish chance, and Bethan Coole is already ON the welsh team (and doing 200 fly I think), so it just seemed quite unfair to deprive Ellen of that chance.

On the other hand I wouldn't have been devastated if a welsh person had felt like kicking me out of the 400 final :D

It's tough, but you can't run a regime on the basis of "these are the rules and you can like them or lump them" and then make exceptions.

From Ellens point of view it was disappointing not to make the final, although Ellen wasn't her usual self at the meet. But from Bethans it was a great chance to have another shot swimming against faster swimmers and she went two seconds faster. Surely good practice for her, I think I would have done the same in Bethan's shoes.Perhaps England should not have hi-jacked the Welsh Nationals and held their own meet!
But Ellen is now in China with 4 other girls swimming in the Chinese Nationals in Shanghai. Nothing on the BS website about it and no link to results:cry:
Best of luck to all five girls.
