Some swimmers in Britain just got a whole lot happier...

Why would they be happier?

Isn't the idea to test yourself against the best competition? The overall level of the meet was just taken down a few notches. Plus, it just means you'll hear the refrain "But Grant wasn't there," which will have validity to it.

Yes, Davies might have vaulted into a certain Gold. But remember, as Sweetenham and others keep telling us ... it's Olympic Golds that count. Worlds, Europeans, and Commonweaths are just warm-ups or sparring matches. Plus, now that Grant won't be competing the overall merit of a Gold at the European Championships has just trumped that at the Commonwealths which wasn't the case before.

In Athens he was swimming without full lung capacity because of an infection and now we learn he was swimming in Montreal with a bum shoulder. Is it just me or is Grant always unwell?

Rumour has it (The brisbane coach rumour mill:rolleyes: ) he is out for good actually. Serious shoulder injury which will 'lead him in another direction'. Not quite sure what yet but press conference later today. Will keep you informed.

Sorry just read article and it basically said all that.

I don't think anyone would be happier that he's injured, but it makes the gold medal a lot more achievable for some swimmers....So yeah, they probably would be "happier".

From a British point of view, it will give us some scope for a more successful games-more gold medals. in a harsh and unforgiving environment, where the Australians have a home advantage, and when we are focusing on the Olympics and Europeans, so the * gold medals we bring home will show the success of the best prepared swim team in the world. Just wait til Beijing.

I think Grant Hackett HAS had a couple of things go wrong, but when you are at the top of a sport like ours, and in an event like his, and pushing your body day in day out in training and competition, it is not to be expected, but it is no surprise. And if anyone can do it (make a comeback), I would say he could. You only have to look at Petria Thomas to see it is possible...

I personally would wish him the best both for his surgery and his subsequent recovery :)
Let it be soon we see his awesome technique and physiology back in a pool near us....

Thorpe will probably line up for 400 free in Melbourne then.

I agree with Tara. When he does sets like 200 x 50m freestyle and 15 x 400m going every 4:30 it's no wonder he picks up a 'twinge' here and there.

He'll be back. He's 25 and not even thinking of retiring. He wants to get his third consecutive Olympic 1500m gold in Beijing.

Anyone bet against him getting it?

That's such a shame. Quite a good article on ASA site about David Davies' reaction to the news.

Carry and a couple of other mid-long distance swimmers might be happy about their new prospects. But I believe Davies when he says he isn't. He has the right attitude.

Article on swimnews about Hacketts successful surgery. Seems from that it isn't as bad as first though...

He says he has been having the pain for quite some time (a year wasn't it?). So, does anyone else think it is rather odd that he waited until mid-November before getting surgery? It would have been much more sensible to have the surgery immediately after the World Champs. He could then have been back in the water long enough to have a shot at the Commy Games. I'm sorry it's just all rather suspicious to me. Either that, or we have only heard a small part of the story.

I believe you may be right again Lane4. Watch this space for more to come from this news. Has Hackett had a falling out with Cotterell I wonder:angel: This is just a guess but I also think there is more to this story. I was hearing very different stories from what the media are saying but we will have to wait and see.
