Anyone know the make-up of the Welsh Team for Melbourne. I know David Davies and Owen Morgan have been selected. Have they had problems with their selection criteria? Are there still swimmers waiting to hear about their place on the team? It would also be useful to know which coaches are involved.

First wave of swimmers:

Could perhaps be more since the Open Stage 3 meet at the beginning of December.

Delighted for my little chum Julie - she's only tiny and still goes like a cat with its tail on fire. (That's no comment on her style you understand!) And also the others of course. Didn't we have young Mr Haffield on here once or twice a good while back? Well done all, and good luck to others who are still trying to get onto the team.

Sounds like it's been decided from what I've heard. And with one important omission in my opinion!

No, said something about further comps for qualification. And who's the omission? IYHO of course... :)

Cari Fflur Davies, she got the new QT for the 50 fly and came 5th in the 200 free. I think they should take her, but that has nothing to do with her being a most excellent person and teammate of course :)

Well the Welsh Team leave for Oz today 29th Jan and all I can think of is how are things going to hold up. I have been working with Owen Morgan over the past month trying to put right as much as I can in such a short time. I called round to see his parents (Saturday) with some photos I took at our last swim session. He was working till 11.00pm and till 5.00pm on the day he leaves as he has zero funding. All I can say is that I hope he keeps his attitude right and keeps focussing on everything we have worked on. What I have not warned him about is the fan mail he is going to get from the kids I teach. We will be 100% behind the "Surrey Welsh Wizard."
The first time I saw him swim when he joined my squad at 9 years old, I realised he was something special. I am just so pleased he asked me for help all these years later and we still have the same respect for each other.

Owen deserves to do really well, I know he will be totally ready for it and hopefully he'll produce something special. :)

Yes 100% behind Owen and the rest of the Welsh team - good luck to all.

No funding? Seems a little unfair seeing how affluent the WASA is and how well they have rewarded the other swimmers on the team.

From what I've heard from a number of other welsh swimmers they are horribly biased.

If this is true, then certainly, it seems to be a case of "if your face doesn't fit" regardless of talent.

Might it not just be because 50 fly isn't an Olympic event?

50 free is.

50 free is.
He was only 6th at the trials in the 50 free, though - would he have been selected if 50 free was his only event, or has he only been allowed to swim it through being selected for 50 fly? If his 50 free is good enough to qualify him for selection in that event by itself, then it does indeed seem unfair if he isn't funded if other Welsh swimmers are.

I thought Linny made an excellent point about this in another thread, which is that transparency is the important thing with funding. If a published set of criteria are applied to determine funding, then nobody can level accusations about it being a case of the face not fitting, and perhaps even more importantly, nobody can use the threat of withdrawal of funding to try to "motivate" people, because the person would be guaranteed funding if they meet the criteria regardless of any personal conflicts.

The squad spent the day in Singapore. Some of them even ventured to the hotel swimming pool. Mad fools! they have the pool to look forward to for six weeks.

The team had a visit from Don Talbot yesterday. He took time to work with Owen which I am sure gave him a big boost. It is good to see that he is getting involved.

I was also pleased to see Owen's comment about how he's being allowed to prepare in his own way.
