Just returned to my hotel room after the heats. Some very interesting swims this morning, making for some great finals in prospect tonight.

Could Scotland shock the Commonwealth, if not the world, by winning 2 Gold medals on the opening night!? It certainly looks possible that Scotland could be ahead of England in the medal table after day one.

However, it was difficult to tell who played their full hand this morning and who was holding back, and if so, to what extent?

Just a word about Kerry Buchan's swim in the 50 breast (35.43). Don't worry, she is not in bad form, her arms separated from the streamline immediately on entry causing her to come to a complete stop before returning to the surface and getting going properly. So 35 was pretty respectable given this and she still made the semi-final so expect her to go a lot faster tonight.

I have to say I like how the Scottish team seem to be relaxed (ok its easy when you swim well) but from what I've seen they seem more like the Australian approach (how you see Lenton, Miatke etc smiling and relaxed before race) and less arrogant or uptight.

Very good indeed.

While not wishing to be negative after a great evening of swimming, I feel it prudent to highlight the WORST relay split of anyone in the field (well almost) - that of England anchor Anthony Howard. England were on for a medal until the takeover - check out the reaction time (0.61 - just a bit faster than Schoeman's flat start) - and a woeful split of 52.27 :speechles

As for Kerry BUCHAN, must have been the start again.

Stayed up til 2am to watch the heats, but had a lie in and missed the finals. I'm much better at staying up late than getting up early (good job I don't have morning training!)

About the hats, I like black hats, but I can't see a thing that's printed on them. Maybe we should go with the American idea and stick a huge England flag on the side. We shouldn't miss swimmers then!

Amazing from Catlin and don't forget Mel. She was just off he best, but a low 1.58 against the some of the best in the world is what we asked for.

My dad told me that Liam Tancock was only a few hundreds off the 50 back world record. Roll on the final!

So what club does Julie Gould swim for now? I thoguht she was at Guildford?!?!?!

lane4
16-03-2006, 11:09 AM
Well did I call it or what!? Scoland 2 Golds and leading the whole meet in the medal table, never mind just England! Incredible stuff. Well done indeed to Caitlin and David, and their (English) coaches Ben and Ian.

To clear up Kerry's DQ, it was NOT for the start, which she got correct this time, but was in fact for perfoming an illegal dolphin leg kick throughout the stroke (not at the start, I mean in the swim, after each normal brs kick).

Anthony Howard must be wishing he done a bit more work on his back end speed. What was that Bill said about extra volume for 100m swimmers?

Sean Piper you got too excited about Sullivan, it was indeed the Canadian anchor who had a faster split. Good from Sullivan all the same though.

Simon Burnett is looking incredible. He did what Kerry Buchan did this morning at the start of the relay (although not quite as bad) and still went out 23 and brought it home in a 24.9 for 48.7. Two more strokes and he would have had Mr Schoeman. Roland must be a worried man now for the 100!

I think the Aussies got a bit of a shock tonight. They were not being complacent but I am sure they did not expect Scotland to win the 200 free, 400 free and New Zealand to take the 200 fly.

An interesting day is promised tomorrow when we see how everyone responds to tonight's results.

I'll have to re-watch my recording sometime to see exactly what Kerry's kick looked like, but on the Go Swim All Strokes DVD, Erik Vendt has some up and down leg movement during his arm pull which I was quite surprised by when I first saw it. I'd assumed it must be okay if Erik does it, but it sounds like it really is quite a dodgy thing to be doing.

SW 7.4 During each complete cycle, some part of the swimmer's head shall break the surface of the
water. After the start and after each turn, the swimmer may take one arm stroke completely back to the
legs. The head must break the surface of the water before the hands turn inward at the widest part of the
second stroke. A single downward dolphin kick followed by a breaststroke kick is permitted while wholly
submerged. Following which, all movements of the legs shall be simultaneous and in the same horizontal

Sean Piper you got too excited about Sullivan, it was indeed the Canadian anchor who had a faster split. Good from Sullivan all the same though.

Yep... duly noted! Sorry folks.

It was worth a try though.. right? :)

Certainly an unusual start for Australia, who I'm sure expected to be way ahead in the medal tally by now.

Libby's 200m was a courageous effort, but beaten fair and square. The 400m free, Stevens wasn't worth much.

Great result for Steph Rice in the 200IM (she's a great girl!!!).

The men's 200m fly went as expected, however it was good to see Josh Krough get up for bronze... regardless of the time.

And the 4x100m relay was the most exciting race I've seen in years! Even without the win, the Aussie boys can be very proud of their effort!!!

I watched the tape back a couple of times, and it did seem that Simon Burnett lost grip on his hand going into the water, making for a pretty messy breakout. Still, makes his time of 48.79 all the more impressive!

My thoughts on Day 1.

Obviously we were very excite that Ian Powell qualified for the final of the mens 200m butterfly. New lifetime best for him in the heats by 2 seconds, and a further PB in the final. He did us proud.

Our men in the "final" of the 4x100m free relay. Strong swims from most, and particularly young Jeremy Osborne (only 15years old) who swam that fastest split of 53.84. We're not really in a position to be up there with the Australia's and South Africas of this world!

Turning to everyone else .....

Not a bad first day in all (I am however rather tired today!)

Mmm, me too, dunno how long I'll be able to keep up witht the late nights/early mornings!!!

Yes was a very good day 1! Nice that Australia wern't completly dominant, and obviously very good for Scotland especially! Some very good swims all round really. Good day of racing, looking forward to the rest!

I know this sounds stupid (and obviously not remotely technical), but one of the things I like about the Commonwealth Games is that whoever wins always looks SO PLEASED. I sometimes think in the World Champs etc you get people who look as though they expected to win, or although they've won the time wasn't good etc., but here everyone just looks so chuffed. It makes a nice change!! But maybe that's just because the home nations have had success so far and the other 2 wins weren't entirely expected. :)

Also, have just realised Ross Davenport did an awesome split in our relay, 48.6!

Kind of questioning your right to be there and will it really be a claim to fame to have been a representative. Its a bit shock jock kind of thing, no personal/individual slurs.

ARGH this is annoying I haven't been able to watch anything yet.

They should be there, most of our team worked really hard to get where they are not just in the last year but for years before that as well. If the opportunity came your way then you're going to take it really aren't you?

Argh, too much work, can't watch it.

Just been updated on the Gsy team situation by Pete & Gino....Ian took 2 secs off. GOOD STUFF

Does anyone know what ever happened to Charlie Crookal-Nixon? Her sister Emily is swimming for Isle of Man at the games and just wondered whether she'd given up swimming??

No, charlotte hasn't given up swimming in fact she got some of the manx consideration times, but didn't qualify to go for the isle of man since they have changed the rules for qualifying onto the manx team: previously emily was allowed because they have a manx grand parent (both of them live in england) but now they wont accept that because it's not a close enough link. But because emily has already been to the commonwealths for the isle of man they had to let her go again if she got the times.

Their dad wasn't very impressed with the rule change, he was in the local papers saying how charlotte was so much better than emily and that we should pay for her to go just because he thought she could make a semifinal...
