I agree! What's the point of spending nearly thirty pounds on a Freeview box if I can't watch swimming WHEN I WANT TO!
And I hate Claire Balding.
And Craig Doyle.

Ian Powell also qualified for the Semi's!!!!
Hurray!
Foster never goes flat out in the heats, but maybe this time he took it too easy.
I'm really annoyed now - they're showing EMPTY badminton courts on Commonwealth Games interactive rather than the pool!
And bowls (BOWLS!) on the other channel.
I'm going to write to Michael Grade.

Classic commentary in the 50m back: "it's all about who hits the wall with their arm first" haha!
Shame for Liam, but great for Matt Clay, he looked really delighted. And good for England! :D

Completely agree, no doubt the commentators are busy commentating to themselves, whilst we get stuck with rugby sevens!! Why can't we just press the red button and go back to swimming?

I agree too. It is getting unbearable. We saw the same sevens clip 3 or 4 times in ten minutes this morning. If they say swimming is on at 8 then in the name of mercy PUT IT ON AT 8!! not 8-05, not waffling about bowls or pop guns for 5 mins first.
Arrgh!
A few names from Leprechaun land featuring in next rounds - so having a good Paddys day so far....

Ah, well then you'd have people like me who are recording it complaining like mad - it's much easier to be able to leave it recording on BBC1.

New Games Record for Schoeman in the 2nd semi of the 50m butterfly .....
Ian Powell inside the old Guernsey Island Long Course Record, but a little slower than the heats.
Oh, and a 0.92 reaction time from Foster ..... can't think why he didn't make the final! Next slowest reaction time in the fly semi's was 0.79 - he's given away 0.13 minimum to everyone!

Yes but wouldn't you rather have to turn it over than just record however many hours of rugby sevens and cycling?

Phew another really good day for
I thought the mens 200m Free was a great race, although Simon Burnett always seemed a little out of it, until he stormed back towards the end. Ross Davenport's win in 1.47.29 was a huge pb (1.48.50 previously?) and the first 4 places separated by 0.15 only. Great to hear the two of them so pleased for each other and also on the podium chuffed at the 1-2.
Matt Clay was another surprise winner, good to see the new ones succeeding at this level. Tancock slower than semi but a good second place.
I thought that Fran Halsall did really well to make the final in 5th place (55.86) joined by Brett, although the 3 aussies are on a different level to the rest of the world.
Chris Cook, ignored by the commentators for most of his semi, qualified fastest into the 100 brs final joined by Gibson, Mew, Gilchrist - should be interesting. Mew looked better than in his heat - not sure his "new" stroke is an improvement. He looks too high in the water to me.
In the 100 backstroke Mel Marshall was 2nd fastest qualifier - hope she can medal and she seems a less pressured lady than in the past. Sexton too laid back and just made the final. The technique of Edington and Rooney very good to watch.
Roll on day 3!

I think these numbers can be a bit dubious in terms of real initial reaction. They are based upon pressure sensors within the blocks which are at their most useful in terms of measuring whether realy takovers are 'safe' or not.
When it comes to a start it might take someone like Foster longer to get his body off the block, but this may just because theres more movement involved for him. He may initiate movement as quick as someone who is 5'11", but they will be off the block in less time as they have less body length to move. Also given his height and long arms his finger tips may be just as far down the pool when leaving the block as a shorter person who 'reacted' quicker by the figures.
A 15m split or breakout time and distance are better measures of how sucessful a start has been, in my opinion.
Thoughts?
Mr 4, how are things going out there? The atmosphere looks pretty good, how does it measure up to other major meets you've been to?
Are you happy with results?

I probably jump on these figures as they're easily obtainable, but like you say in the real world it's probably less important than the combined time of the dive/underwater element of the start.

I totally agree. If you look at the reaction times for the ASA Masters at Sheffield, it's very noticeable that Andy Manley had consistently relatively slow recorded times. Yet he was much quicker to reach 15m than people who were recording much quicker reaction times. E.g. Spidey recorded a 0.55 reaction time in the 100 free, which is faster than anyone in the CG 50 fly semis, and I'm sure even Spidey himself would admit that he's not a faster starter than those guys.
To some extent, the longer you spend on the block, the more you can compress your muscles before the dive, and the more powerful the dive will be. The extra speed off the block will then cause you to overtake a swimmer who left the block slightly earlier, but with less speed.
Again I stayed up til almost 1am watching the heat swims on interactive (absolutely no interuptings) but I missed the morning coverage of the finals and what great finals they were.
I was rooting for Ross after I heard Simon aweful accent during his heat swim interview! I'm so pleased for Matt Clay as well. Two of my old teammates getting commonwealth gold! How exciting.
Although the results at the CG may not totally reflect it (as the best swimmers will be split between the home nations) things are looking pretty good for the future for both the mens and the womens 4 x 200 f/c teams
Spidey recorded a 0.55 reaction time in the 100 free, which is faster than anyone in the CG 50 fly semis, and I'm sure even Spidey himself would admit that he's not a faster starter than those guys.
Isn't he faster than a speeding bullet?
Or is that someone else?
(I still hate Claire Balding)
What a brilliant opening two days we've had! Start as we mean to go on I hope!!!! :D

There's a lot of these sorts of stats here:

Oh yeah that's how shall I put it, a "slightly" informative link.
I managed to watch the swimming today, highlights etc. some pretty good stuff going on. Thought it was quite cool eatching Jonny swimming from the underwater camera, imagine his mother will want a copy of that.
Nice to see Clay win, I hadn't heard too much about him previously so I'd imagine he would be pretty happy with that as anyone would really.
Ok, I give up, swimming at 12.45 this time!!!! No chance with getting up for work at 7 tomorrow, then a weekend of counties! The tape will have to do! Will get to bed at a reasonable hour for a change!
Enjoy guys :rainbow:

Alas I'm not here on the official staff but rather as a "personal coach" according to my accreditation. Thus it's a hotel down the road for me and no worries about laptop bans and the like! :) ;) I am staying with one of the NPD's though, so I will have to watch myself and not step too far out of line! :banghead:
