Foster to under perform. Or in my view, just perform to expectations (not very well)

Mel Marshall to have a good go at the 200 back?? I think she's got a good chance, although we don't know how Fargus is swimming, and Sophie Edington's doing really well so far.

Its a shame Burnett can't compete in the 50. I think he would have had a chacne at breaking the world record!

I don't know about everyone else, but i'm hoping Foster swims well and puts in a good performance. Why? Because he's on Team England and they deserve and need our support. Negative comments like that probably don't help. Have a nice day.

Settle down with a good book .... we could be here for a long time with this 1500 free!
This speed could well play into Jonny Le Noury's hands ..... he's the 9th fastest of 9, and if this heat goes too slow they might open the door for him ...... perhaps!
Mingzhe Cheah ..... this is your chance to let Jonny swim a final!

Another session over.
The womens 400m freesytle is gonna be a very exciting final. Womens 200m backstroke - can Mel Marshall win it? David Davies - what time can he do without serious competition? Mens 50 Free - Mark Foster, yes or no? Mens 200 I.M. .... More metal for Scotland??

Not up to speed on this... but why isn't Simon Burnett swimming the 50m??
I would have loved to see how fast he could go. Judging by his 100m swim I would've thought a sub-22 was possible!

Simon Burnett flew back to the US today to represent his University at the NCAA Championships so unfortunately won't be racing in the 50m Freestyle or presumably the 4x100m Medley relay.

By the way .... Gold for Papua New Guinea!!!
How many gold's have they ever had? Well done to Ryan Pini in the 100m fly! Those medal placings were pretty tight.
And a shame the home nations couldn't get anyone into the womens 50m fresstyle final, but yet another 1/2/3 for Australia! And Alison Sheppard's Games Record has gone as well .....

3rd Hannah McLean

Strong swim for Owen Morgan in the first semi-final of the 50m freestyle, but it's not gonna be good enough for the final.
In fact, Chris Cozens is probably gonna struggle to get in ....
New Games Record for Breet Hawke, and not a bad swim for Mr. Foster ..... 22.61 ..... can he do anything in the final to go out with a bang?

Excellent session!! Outstanding performances from the Home Nations tonight, in particular Caitlin in the 400m Freestyle, to come back so strong was awesome, great race from Jo Jackson and the 16-year-old Australian Bronte Barratt. Also Liam Tancock & Gregor Tait in the 100m Backstroke and then Gregor again in the 200m Individual Medley - 6 Golds for Scotland?! Who'd have thought!
World Record for Leisel Jones, amazing swim, completely dominates the rest of the world in Breaststroke and to win the 50, 100 & 200 is awesome. Great 1.07.83 for Kirsty to yes break both British & Scottish Record and Kate & Kerry finishing 6th & 8th.
Gutted that Todd didn't medal in the 100m Butterfly but an outstanding swim from the Papua New Guinea swimmer to take the gold.. do we reckon he was actually born there or he's got a relative?!
Great result for Mel to take the Silver in the 200m Backstroke, Sexton nowhere near finishing in 8th in 2:15.
Impressive Womens 4x100m Freestyle Relay with the Australians just missing the WR but finishing over 6 seconds ahead of Team England who took Silver with an amazing final leg for Fran Halsall, and bronze for Canada.

I read the online versions of the Papua New Guinea papers every day and Ryan Pini's name has certainly featured there for a couple of years. I'd be amazed if he actually trains in PNG, but it's not a swimming nationality he acquired only recently.

He's not proven anything yet, making the final in 22.6 is no massive acheivment for Foster.
If he medals then that would be a good acheivment so heres hoping....

According to Andy and Aidy he trains in Australia.
Maybe Claire Balding will be able to offer a detailed insight into his situation?

Even if he does medal, someone somewhere (and I'm not saying it would necessarily be you or have any one in particular in mind) will have something negative to say about it!
People seem to love to hate him for some reason!!

True, I just think by his own high standards making a Commonwealth final is nothing special and should be expected.
I think the reason people don't like him is because he moaned a lot about not making the team for the last Olympics and Worlds as he wasn't good enough to make the time. He also makes some bold statements without backing them up.
Hope he gets a medal though.

I'm a big Foster fan, and was gutted when i heard he was to retire (even though it was blatantly obvious the end was near). But i think what you've commented on here is pretty much spot on. I think he should have gone to the Olympics (but lets not get into that now!) and he has made some statements that have made me cringe, e.g declaring that no one would get near to his 50 free LC record, then having it broken three days later by Burnett. I just hope people look back on his career and remember him as one of the greats of the sport. I hope he does the magic in the final tomorrow.....

They said yesterday that Ryan Pini, lives and trains in Australia however i'm guessing that he is almost certainly a true Papua New Guineaen as he was singing along to the National Anthem during the medal presentations!:rainbow:
It was an awesome swim to take Papua New Guinea's first ever Commonwealth swimming medal. I think its probably also the closest finish to a race we've since during these championships, as virtually anyone of the 8 finalists could have won going into the last 5m!

For those of you outwith Scotland and have Sky you may want to have a look at BBC1 Scotland at 7PM tonight.
A review of the first 5 days of the Scottish team.
Hopefully some interviews etc. with the swim team.

If anyone wants to see how the Papua New Guinea press reacts to Pini's gold tomorrow, take a look at:

I think they usually publish in the small hours UK time.

According to the Aussie press, Ryan Pini was born in Port Moresby (PNG's capital I believe) and only moved to Brisbane when he was 18. His parents still live in PNG and Ryan returns there 3 or 4 times each year. Although he no doubt benefits from the facilities in Australia (PNG has one very old 50m pool apparently) and speaks with an Aussie accent, there's no question that he is anything onther than a true PNG swimmer - no flag of convenience for him!

He was on the frot and back pages of the Post-courier yesterday, and this is from today's:
"Gold medal winning swimming sensation Ryan Pini was speechless at the response of his fellow Papua New Guineans to his victory at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Monday night. In an exclusive phone interview with the Post-Courier yesterday, Pini said he was: “Still trying to take in everything after Monday night’s absolute glory.” When Pini was told that thousands of Papua New Guineans who took time out to watch him race went berserk on the streets upon his victory, he was speechless for few seconds. After a pause, he said: “Oh really . . . that’s something amazing. “I’m a surprised . . . astounded. “Mate it’s an emotional time for me and I can’t wait to get back to PNG. “Oh . . . it’s unbelievable and I will see everyone when I get back on Monday.” Pini’s golden win has captured many hearts as thousands flooded the radio stations and media outlets with congratulatory messages."
