Just added up the times from the finals of each mens 100m event to get a guide for performance in the medley relay, and somewhat depressingly it seems that not having Simon Burnett will make a big difference:
ENG (Burnett) 3:37.72
ENG (Cozens instead of Burnett) 3:39.87
AUS 3:38.27
CAN 3:41.43
SCO 3:41.26
Where a country didn't have a finalist I used their best semi-final time. I didn't include countries if they had an event where none of their swimmers reached the semi-finals.

Can't davenport do it?

Can't davenport do it?
Interesting suggestion - I had assumed Ross would be slower, but looking at the omega site he did a substantially better leg than Chris in the 4x100 free relay (which I assume you already knew and that was the reason why you said it), so perhaps that's the way they'll go.

Was it a 48 he did? Cant remember, he's just swimming so well though. Going to be a great race between Australia and England. Hopefully the scots can nick a bronze too!!

Standards seemed to have slipped tonight. People are making finals with times that wouldn't even make the finals in Region championships.

Pity you couldn't go head-to-head. Maybe you needed the big Aussie Michelin man who was filling in time.

Interesting to note...
Australia will be sending off a fresh team of four in the final of the relay, compared to England who seemed to swim their "A" team in the heats. Albeit not at 100%, but this may have been the edge needed to get over the Aussies!!

Quick question (I suspect chris_lamb will be able to answer this one!).
Substitutes are listed for finals. IF it becomes necessary to use a sub for whatever reason, do they just get put in the now empty lane or do the lanes get shuffled round to put the reserve in lane 8. Or is it just up to the ref on the day?

So 22.49 wasn't good enough... But he again had the slowest reaction time. Shame. I'd like to see him back in 4 years time! :D

Is Schoeman really going to be swimming the breastroke leg for SA in the medley relay? He's down as second swimmer on the start sheet.

Although 3 finals, 3 games records, so not too bad!

Ryk Neethling beat Schoeman in the 100m free, so it makes sense to have him do the freestyle leg in the medley relay. The South African 100m breaststroker was around 3 secs slower than the winner, so it's possible that Schoeman can do a faster 100m breaststroke.

The event or events must be re-seeded and supplementary sheets must be issued detailing the changes or substitutions, as prescribed in SW 3.1.2.

Thoroughly enjoyed the ladies 400IM.
Not very polite this and I feel a bit guilty about even saying it but would Jenny Reilly not just be so much faster if she wasn't dragging all that excess through the water? :o
How fast could she be?

Linny,
I think you were just the only one brave enough to say what everyone else is thinking!
Hannah had an outstanding swim from the outside lane, a pity she hadn't swum to her P.B as she'd have won the bronze!!:aarrgghh:

Libby Lenton split 52.87 in the relay, that has to be the fastest ever (fastest previously Jodie Henry 52.95?). How she could keep pushing herself when she was so far ahead was amazing and well done the English ladies - oh and gents.

Good Job boys!!!!!

That's a bit harsh, boss, it does say "Commonwealth games" at the top of the thread... :p
And thanks for the answer to my question, Linny. I'm not an official so don't have an official copy of FINA rules, and I knew you clever lot would have the response at your fingertips.
And disappointed in you lot that no-one gave the pat on the back that the lovely David Davies deserves. Just because we all expected him to win is no reason not to congratulate him when he does! Well done to the dear boy, a good job well done! (I didn't do it earlier as I had to drag myself away from my PC and telly to get my car fixed.)

Anyone who goes under 15:00 in the 1500 should get a big round of applause.
And if you ever want to check an international rule, FINA's rulebook is online here:

Just caught the end. I did notice she said MR.Sweetenham.
Maybe they are not on first name terms anymore.
Just watching it on interactive. I think the word you are looking for Vicki is relaxed.

I do believe it was pretty much the middle of the night (Australian time) and she'd come straight from the after-swimming party .... that would probably explain it!
Haddock
21-03-2006, 09:48 PM
Yes Chris I think that explains it.
If the program was live on BBC2 then it would have been around six in the morning.
She had probably been up all night and it sounded as though she was heading for bed after the show.

Anyone see James Hickman and (I think) Dave Heathcock on the Games last night?

Was watching the diving and after the men the stream was still on until the ladies started. The commentators were chatting away.
Anyway just before the diving started they were racing model boats or something up and down the swimming pool.
For those of you who were at the swimming did they do anything similar to get the crowd wound up for the start as it sounded as if this is what they were doing.

Yes they did have some model boat races (along with a few other things) to get the crowd involved and fill some gaps when there wern't many heats on. Extremely fast the boats were!

A new training aid perhaps? Equip the boats with pop-guns, stick them in the pool and chase the swimmers, if they manage to catch the swimmers they can shoot something at them? Our coach used to tell the kids stories about crocodiles in the water to get them to swim faster but this would be MUCH more fun! :)

Is that the kind of fun incentive that you would need to get back in the water and take you from HAF to GF again.

Nope, I'm still firmly HAF :p but some time in the course of this year I will try to get back into a routine to get back in the pool. After all, I'll be an E next year...

Hey, I used to teach a child who thought his shadow was a shark and refused to go anywhere near the water for about three months.
