Thought I would update each day on who has qualified for each event for the British team to go to the European Longcourse this season.
Only two finals on day one:
Mens 400m Freestyle - David Carry, David Davies and Robbie Renwick.
Womens 400m Individual Medley - Rebecca Cooke, Hannah Miley and Jessica Dickons.

I agree with who has been selected other than the 4x100 relay which it seems is very confusing to work out who's qualified and who will be in the relay. Firstly, Mel Marshall led off the relay at CG in 55.24 so must therefore be included in the top 6 for the relay, thus pushing Jessica Sylvester out of the team.
Another point is whether Caitlin McClatchey will be included in the top 6, she may not have swam in the relay at CG, but she did turn in 57.54 in her 200free and is entered in the world SC for 100free. Will she be included in the relay?! who knows (apart from Bill S).
If she is included this throws up another point then you would think this would push Amy Amith out of the top 6, however, for selection of the relays the selection policy says "The fastest six 'available' and eligible swimmers in the 100m freestyle event at both the CG06 and the Trials will be selected" This suggests that the times from CG do not require the swims to have been done in the final and therefore heat swims (provided fast enough) will be sufficient. In this case Amy Smith's 56.71 (heat of CG) would put her ahead of Katherine Wyld's 56.73.
The order of which the 6 selected swimmers are ranked may also make a difference when deciding the 4 girlsthat will swim the final and the 2 that will only swim heats.
:banghead: Maybe i'm just over complicating things lol!!
I just feel sorry for the girls that have swam at trials and are probably still non the wiser as to what times were needed in the final, and how many places there were. Would be interested to know who has/will be selected and if the girls knew what was needed from them to qualify for the team.

I 'picked' the team based on my interpretation of the selection policy, in particular the following two sections:
The fastest six 'available' and eligible swimmers in the 100m freestyle event at both the CG06 and the Trials will be selected.
Remaining places from available and eligible swimmers will be filled, based on the Final times recorded at both the CG 06 and the Trials, with Final performances from CG06 taking priority over Final performances at the Trials.
So that second section to me suggests that ONLY times swum in finals will be considered, and the first bit appears to exclude Mel Marshall as it suggests only performances from the individual events will be considered. It's worth noting though that the second section (in bold) comes under the heading 'Individual events', so that could all go out the window, but that was my interpretation. :)
Other qualifiers from day two:
Mens 100m Breaststroke - Chris Cook, James Gibson and Darren Mew. James Kirton missed out by 0.01!
Womens 200m Backstroke - Mel Marshall and Elizabeth Simmonds.

Either or indeed neither of us could be correct, who knows. Its a shame these selection policies can't be more clearer, with them changing from one trials to another but i suppose with the CG, world SC, and trials i guess it's been very hard for them to draw up a fair selection policy for everybody, and one that's easy to understand lol

Working a bit better just now but not all results are up, some events are not shown Womens 100 Back and Mens 200 Back.
Womens 200m Backstroke - Mel Marshall and Elizabeth Simmonds.
Does anyone know if the likes of Simmonds and Halsall will swim in both the Euro Senior LC and Euro Junior LC or just the one event?

However good Caitlin is, and there is no denying she could probably go faster than many of the girls who have swum the 100m free both at the Trials and the CG, she did NOT swim it either as an individual event or in the 4x100m freestyle relay in the CG so it would be totally wrong to give her a place in the 4x100m freestyle relay team.
Also, I just want to say congratulations to Katie for a great swim and a huge PB!

I agree, the girls at trials all swam very quick, probably spurred on by knowing there was an oppurtunity of a relay place, and i hope those who deserve their swims in the relay get them.

Qualifiers from day three:
Mens 200m Individual Medley - Gregor Tait, Joe Roebuck, David Carry and Euan Dale.
On a day of semi finals, some good junior swims worth commenting on, these four I believe are British Junior records (if they still exist?):
Womens 50m Butterfly - Francesca Halsall - 27.54
Womens 200m Freestyle - Francesca Halsall - 2:00.80
Womens 100m Butterfly - Jessica Dickons - 1:01.07
Mens 200m Butterfly - Peter Thompson - 2:02.67

I don't think that's quite correct although at 15 he did go 1:56.It might be, he swam 1.59.02 at 14 and his 1.54.92 world record at 15. Hasn't improved that much since then though. :p I guess he hasn't fulfilled his potential.

Maybe I was slightly out. I just checked his book 'Beneath the Surface' and he says he swam 2:04 in 1999 in orlando - when he was 13. However later on that year at the senior nationals he 'only' managed 2:07.

That's a great time, but it does (happily) make it sound quite a bit more 'human' - there are 14 year olds currently doing below 2.00. :)

Obviously relays for both events will still be decided but that decision lies in the hands of British Swimming, and Bill Sweetenham.
Congrats Katie on a great week of racing, you must be pretty pleased with your results. Outstanding 200m Butterfly from Jessica Dickons, in fact, all of her races where amazing, at 15 years old she'll be one to watch over the next couple of years. :D

100m Backstroke : Gregor Tait (CG), Matt Clay, James Goddard

Is this the case? I thought the selection criteria was pretty clear on what had to be acheived to secure a relay place. Surely it is not one persons decision?

Thanks DAK. Yes I guess it is the case that the swimmers will be chosen from the selection criteria of the fastest 6, however when it is not straight forward and some swimmers were not at trials however were at the Commonwealths it makes the selection a lot harder to see. I wouldn't want to put down any names in case it was not correct and changed at a later date. I would assume that British Swimming had some discussion over relay selection, for example the previously mentioned 100m Freestyle split from her 200m Freestyle for Caitlin McClatchey in Melbourne, would this time be used to put her on the team?!

Many thanks for the team listings mad4it. Made for very interesting reading to see them all lined up like that. There were a couple of other swimmers who made times in semi-finals but then were outside the time in the finals. Not sure in that case if they will be picked as well?

Wellllll although I know she'd knock me flat on 100 free, I'm hoping that this (from the selection policy) should put paid to that possibility:
4.3 Split times or performances from time trials will not be considered.

Absolutely Katie. According to the letter of the law you should be in the team to go to Budapest. It is clear in black and white...if that changed it would never stand up in a court of law!!

100m Butterfly : Terri Dunning, Ros Brett
200m Butterfly : Jessica Dickons, Terri Dunning, Rebecca Shaw
200m Individual Medley : Terri Dunning, Fran Halsall
400m Individual Medley : Rebecca Cooke, Hannah Miley, Jessica Dickons
4x100m Freestyle Relay : Ros Brett, Julia Beckett, Katherine Wyld, Amy Smith, Jessica Sylvester
4x200m Freestyle Relay : Francesca Halsall, Rebecca Adlington, Stephanie Proud
* In the freestyle relays, Hunter & Renwick, Smith & Sylvester and Adlington & Proud will only be eligible to swim in the heats. Medley relay teams will be selected by the head coach based on performances in the individual 100m events.
Interesting to note the events with no or one qualifier:
Mens 50 free, 100 free and 200 fly.
Womens 50 free, 100 free, 50 back, 200 breast and 50 fly.
This suggests a gap in Britain in sprint freestyle in particular, and is interesting to note the link to trials where the womens 50 & 100 free events had a distinct lack of people making the qualifying time!

I'm not sure that's quite right about the girls' relays... I mean, what about Ros Brett in the 4 x 100 free? And Mel Marshall as she led off the 4 x 100 team in Melbourne, doesn't she count? Or are they not listed as they're swimming other events? Sorry bit confused. The way it was worked out I though Fran was the fastest through, followed by Mel and Ros, with Amy Smith in at number 6 (providing her time at the trials is the one used as her 56.71 wasn't done in the Commonwealth final, or number 5 if it was). Not sure though. We'll have to wait and see.

12-04-2006, 09:33 PM
Well Katie I might be wrong but as I mentioned earlier my interpretation of the selection policy is that only times from individual events count, therefore no Mel Marshall. Sorry, I missed Ros Brett off because I forgot she didn't qualify for the individual.
