Has anyone got dates for National Short Course and also World Championship Trials for Melbourne 2007? The ASA Calendar has nothing about them.

Re trials for World LC, I can't remember where I read it, but something gave me the impression only swimmers who are competing at European LC can be selected, and I would guess that selection will depend on times achieved at European LC.

That sounds a bit short-sighted. It means swimmers who make progress in the months leading up don't an opportunity. Can't think that that can be the case it gives swimmers little incentive.

I agree Pete, but it wouldn't be the first time that the selection process has started a very long time before the event, especially if you count the need to work your way up the various levels of meets to be eligible to take part in the trials. It will mean that there may well be swimmers who are good enough on the day of the competition, but won't be taking part. I haven't cross-referenced times in detail, but my hunch was that this happened for the CG if you look at times achieved at the trials shortly afterwards by swimmers who weren't at the CG.

I don't think there are any national short course championships any more? Although I noticed they are on the calendar for 2008, and there is mention of an English winter championships in 2007?

I would imagine swimmers can qualify for Melbourne at the Nationals in August, it just probably hasn't been billed as trials because anyone with a top 25 in the world time will be swimming at the Europeans, and it seems probable the standard required for worlds will be significantly higher than this, and therefore that anyone with a realistic chance of qualifying for Melbourne will be on the European team. We'll have to wait for the selection policy!

I believe that we are going to be using the FINA A times as the base standard for selection for Worlds and Olympics now. This means that we should get 2 swimmers per event in almost every event. For 2007 Worlds, I understand that times from Europeans and the Youth/Senior Nationals in Sheffield (1-6 Aug) will count as the only way on to the team.

I believe that we are going to be using the FINA A times as the base standard for selection for Worlds and Olympics now. This has got to be good, but do you know why the change of heart? More money in the pot? An acknowledgement that the required standards were too tough? Something else all together?
