Is anyone aware of open water swimming spots around Basingstoke (nr Old Basing to be precise!)....I want to get the wetsuit on and start training for the Summer Triahtlon events, but am struggling since moved away from London to find any Lido's. Have car so can drive to spots if a little out of the way.

:banghead:

Lakes preferred but Lidos and rivers good too!

Thanks

Try logging on to Oliver Merrington's website on lidos and asking him to post the same question on the Yahoo Lido website; if you become a member of Yahoo Lidos you can then "post" messages yourself

or buy copy of "Liquid Assets"

or e-mail yacov on the RALSA website

Maybe it's too far for you, but there's a triathlon training facility that looks pretty good nr. M25 J14:

Openwaterswimuk was set up recently by the triathlete Mike Trees.

His nearest competitor is at Wraysbury lake. It was set up by Martyn Edwards (another triathlete) of SBR. His web-site is at www.sbrsports.com

Why don't you join Basingstoke Tri Squad? This might help with your training. Have a look here (http://www.basingstoketrisquad.co.uk/)

We tend to go to Heron Lake on Saturday mornings (meet at 5:50am at the lower car park at the Aquadrome). Heron Lake is near j13 on M25. Some people also go mid-week and on Sundays. We also go to the Tri Quays (http://www.tri-quays.co.uk) nr Mychett - this is closer but the times when you can go swimming there are less predictable.

If you are interested in the Tri Squad, come along at 8:00pm on Friday (7 July 2006) to the Cricket Club at May's Bounty (go to the bar and ask where the Tri Squad are) or use contact details on the website.

Welcome, Tigger, glad to have you, hope you enjoy yourself on swimclub.

There are several people from the Basingstoke area who join in on the forum, you never know you might get lots of people turning up, (as long as they're prepared to get up at stupid o'clock to get into a smelly lake with fishes and weed and who knows what lurking!)

You'd never guess I was a confirmed pool person who's perfectly happy smelling of chlorine and watching tiles go past - open water's too scary!!!
