Has any body had a coach, or still does that seems to have their favourite swimmers in the club.

I've seen a lot of coaches favourites over the years. It got to me at one time, but there was very little that could be done about it - if anything it spurred the other swimmers on to better things in an attempt to be noticed!!
Some of the swimmers warranted their status as favourites, others didn't (but could do no wrong in any case  )
I was always one of the others

I could have written this exact same post!:)
i think its hard to not have favourites cos people are always going to get on better with some people, but i think as long as the coach is not over the top, and the other swimmers don't find it too obvious, then it can't be a bad thing!

In the US, they divide the levels of Championships to Nationals, Junior Nationals, and then the local championships. My old coach used to favor those who made Junior Nationals and above, and it was very obvious. His support and encouragement for those swimmers far exceeded that of those who only qualified for the local championships. That is why I left the team. What good is a coach who supports certain swimmers. I remember a time when me and two of my team mates were in the same heat for the 500 yard free, they were in lanes 3 and 5 and I was in lane 7. He had spent the entire event standing and rooting on the side of the pool closest to Lane 7. When my heat got up, he moved to the other side of the pool by lane 1 to root the 2 junior nationalists on as if whatever time I did mattered. It pissed me off so much I didn't even try and swam a time worse than when I first swam the event at age 11.

No, its someone who now swims for my club. Left one of the local rival clubs a year or two ago. Has come on a treat. Won 3 medals at NAGs this year.

As a coach I don't have favourites and treat all equally. However, in the persuit of excellence it is obvious that those who attend and want to work are going to get preferential treatment. If it's attention your after you will have to earn it.

It is not the boy you are talking about but if it was I would have to say that your club's old assistant coach clearly did a tremendous job with said 'NAG medal winner' when he first entered the fray.
Haven't heard of any others making the switch from your lowly rivals to yourselves recently at all. In fact.........;)

I've had 8 enquiries this week alone. Unfortunately, I had to tell them to come back when they were good enough.

For what its worth, in my experience of the last 20 years, coaches have always had favourites and always will, but so what! If you are not one of the "chosen few" who have the coaches "ear", don't worry. Use the negative aspect of a coach not noticing you to your advantage. Train hard, give 100% at all times and work on your personal goals. I know not being "favoured" can hurt, it's human nature, but in the end you are in the sport for you and what you can achieve not in it for the coach! You might need to develop a thick skin, but just ignore the favouritism and get on with it!
Please no one take offence and misinterpret the ramblings of an old boy slowly loosing his marbles.

i feel really lucky... i have had the same coach for 5 years and i can honestly say that he NEVER EVER played favorites... even with the slackers who always sat out he alwayz stayed kind and friendly, just the same as he would with everyone else. when i had mai first varsity season, i wuz absolutely floored becuz the coach wuz soooo mean he obviously only liked the fast girls and he would totally ignore anyone who wuznt in the top 5. one of the girlz never ever got to swim in any of the meets. he took an experience that could be remembered upon fondly for years to come and twisted it into a hurtful joke that really shocked me. i just moved and i really miss mai old coach~~~ *sniff* he wuz like a part of my family... no matter your times, as long as you came to practice and alwayz tried hard, alwayz did your best, he loved you equally. and the thing is, you alwayz WANTED to work hard, becuz you wanted to show him how much you loved him and appreciated his hard work. and you knew you were always okay as long as you did ur best, becuz he was blessed with the rare gift of knowing when a person wuz pushing their limits and he recognized and appreciated that. i feel very lucky to have had that kind of experience~ i'll alwayz remember and cherish mai coach

I wouldn't say my coach has 'favourites' but she does get on with some swimmers more than others!
