Have installed "hit" counter on our website, which tells the admin side, not just the number of hits, but Geography (different countries), most visited pages, number of daily visitors, names of some organisations (eg councils, houses of parliament, newspapers etc.)

3% of our hits are coming from the States, with Ireland a close third after that!

Particularly useful for campaigns or advertising on any topic.

Ooo, interesting. Where do you get hold of hit counters? (And perhaps more relevant on the websites thread - would you like me to move it?)

I wouldn't believe what they say

The Speedo League states from April say there were 294589 hits from United States and 188877 hits from Great Britain.

log on to onestatfree.com and follow the instructions!

as regards accuracy the stats are for the admin side only, giving the Broomhill Pool Trust an idea of where interest is coming from and how people have been referred: in other words, how do people find out about a site in the first place;

i found out about swimclub uk through Mike Read, who is chairman of the
Channel Swimming Association and President of the Broomhill Pool Trust; so that was a personal recommendation; but if people log on through justgiving.com or swimclub uk or from one of our links with other pools, eg Brockwell Park Lido, then that comes through in the statistics of top ten referrers

i can't speak for Speedo obviously, but they are a world-wide organisation and sponsored David Walliams charity swim across the Channel, which has raised nearly half a million pounds for Sport Relief, so there is no reason why their stats can't be accurate; over 3,000 pages of our website have been read in the last few weeks and we're a miniscule organisation compared with them: Speedo are also one of the main sponsors for the Round Ireland Swim!

Someone with more knowledge may help but I am sure I read somewhere recently that if you use AOL then the internet address you use is registered in the USA.

More thank likely ... anyone that's linked to a .com domain is thought of as American ..... it's not clever enough to tell you that the visitor originated from the UK.

Don't forget that hits are not the same as visitors though.

The site counter has made quite a bit of difference to the way i run www.savebroomhillpool.org

with the photo section coming consistently top or second on a daily basis, i have started putting weblinks with the photos where relevant

eg for the Round Ireland Swim and Diveology
for ruth corney (photographer)
for other lido's websites etc
for the film on Broomhill:- www.showreeldoctor.co.uk

it means that people can click on a photo they like and make a note of the website connection all in one go

i have also tried to get our web address onto as many different types of website as possible: heritage/swimming/justgiving.com/literary eg played in britain and so on

when people google broomhill, they come up then with a whole range of possibilities

i know this may not seem relevant to someone running a straightforward club website, but it's worth knowing if you want to branch out into a wider field; i didn't start becoming political until 4 years ago when our lido closed; i had never even sent an e-mail before october of last year; and suddenly i'm running a web-site and taking e-mails from (potentially) all over the world.

so, for anyone else born before 1950 take heart! skills come as they are used, and that applies to swimming/websites/piano practice/public speaking etc

I've tried a few counters over the years, and have decided http://www.statcounter.com/ is by far the best. It records everything flawlessly and is really simple to use.
