FINA has announced it will hand out €1.56 million in prize money at next year’s World Championships. Gold medallists in each of the events will receive €9400, while second place finishers take away €5460, and third place will be awarded €3900.
"We are trying to improve this product and alluring more people into the sport is the goal," explained executive director Cornel Marculescu (pictured), adding that prize money will also increase for team sports such as waterpolo.
Marculescu also confirmed FINA would pay for the transportation, accommodation and food for 2500 participants at the Championships.
"The athletes chosen will be spread out across all the federations and will be based on their participation in past events. This is one of the ways FINA can accept some of the federation expenses so it can spend these funds on building infrastructure instead," he said.
Another &euro390 000 will be handed out in prize money at the 2008 Championships in Manchester as part of a strategy to increase the profile of swimming in Africa and South America, who remain vastly under-represented at the highest level.
