FINA has announced it will hand out €1.56 million in prize money at next year’s World Championships. Gold medallists in each of the events will receive €9400, while second place finishers take away €5460, and third place will be awarded €3900.
"We are trying to improve this product and alluring more people into the sport is the goal," explained executive director Cornel Marculescu (pictured), adding that prize money will also increase for team sports such as waterpolo.
Marculescu also confirmed FINA would pay for the transportation, accommodation and food for 2500 participants at the Championships.
"The athletes chosen will be spread out across all the federations and will be based on their participation in past events. This is one of the ways FINA can accept some of the federation expenses so it can spend these funds on building infrastructure instead," he said.
Another &euro390 000 will be handed out in prize money at the 2008 Championships in Manchester as part of a strategy to increase the profile of swimming in Africa and South America, who remain vastly under-represented at the highest level.

A mixture of thoughts here. Is this from within the Fina existing budget, if so where was it going to before? Or are the fees that come through the affilated bodies to be increased to cover the awards. Or is it from sponsorship.?

Good that prize money is looking a bit better, after all, how much did Tiger Woods earn from his last 6 winning tournamants? $7,016,480. !!!!

I think it's good - it will probably come mostly from sponsorship, tv rights etc I would guess? But definitely good to offer a financial incentive as it keeps people in the sport and gets more people involved.

£5000 for being world champion - I mean how many sports offer less money than that? And how many sports stars earn that every week in many sports worldwide??

Like the losers in the 1st round of Wimbledon get more than that!!! But it's a start. I suppose, if the World Cups aren't being run, there is more prize money available to FINA.
