Boring subject, I know!

The ASA have confirmed to me 3 times that all cat 2 competitors must complete one of these, whether they take medication or not. Annually. (The current wording on the form is incorrect and being amended and re-printed.)

Has any other club done this yet? We are about to, but I can't see how we will be able to control and monitor without a huge amount of work. The alternative seems to be just to give the forms out and leave the responsibility with the competitor.

It all seems over the top except for the very best swimmers.

Maybe a better way would be for swimmers to complete a declaration ahead of any event at which dope testing may be carried out (maybe regional level and above?). I don't know if this fits with current UK sport testing regime, but works for me.

That would be perfect for me! But it wouldnt fit in with what the ASA are saying.

apropo your site - I couldnt get the video of RD dive to download? Waited about 6 minutes.

Where on earth do you find the time to set up so much good advice? And newly married too. (Sorry, I didnt realise this, I had thought you had already tied knot down under)

Hmm, works fine for me (even with a cleared cache it started playing in about 30s).

Might be your version of media player not supporting auto start (but unlikely) so have you tried pressing the play button?

Otherwise I'd suggest downloading it and viewing it locally - right click, "save target as..." on the "download this video (1MB)" link beneath the player.

As for the time, lets just say I have a very understanding wife!

That would be good news indeed. But I did ask the same question of the membership dept twice and twice got emphatic answer that they were required. Can you tell me what your source is please?

Seen a copy of an email from the ASA on the subject. Clubs to be informed shortly.

Just received (15th Dec) the 2007 all members pack from the ASA. It unambiguously states that all Cat 2 members are required to complete a Medical Declaration Form annually. Do they realise the work involved for a club?

On the two sided white sheet of notes. Is not highlighted in any way, just one of the points.

Found it, couldn't see it in the letter.
Have sent email to ASA and await developments. Have been assured previously that medical forms were not required!!

Thanks! Letter arrived today. What a b....s up.

Curious to think that without your help I (and a load of others) would have done a huge amount of uneccessary work.

I take it that membership secretaries the length and breadth of the nation can breathe a huge sigh of relief and that as before it is only those cat 2 ASA members who use medication, supplements etc that need to complete the MDF. (You hint that this is the case but don't specifically say so....no doubt still exhaling!!!!!)

Verbatim:-

Please note that the leaflet entitled "Inforamtion for Club Registration Officers" which was sent out in your registration pack contained an error relating to the MDF.

MDF's only have to be completed annually by Cat 2 members who compete in national events (all disciplines excluding Masters).

New forms and guidelines will be available in the New Year.

Please accept my apologies for this error.

I'm not really qualified to make any informed comment about the apparent ambivalence of the ASA towards the advantages that could be gained by doping in the Masters category....others, no doubt with a foot in the camp will set out the pro's and con's.

But.... so far as younger competitive swimmers are concerned I reckon that by confining the requirement to file the MDF annually to only those who compete in national events is a retrograde step, sending out inappropriate mesages and releasing young swimmers at lesser levels to obtain unfair advantages by ignoring whether deliberately or unwittingly the anti-doping ethos of the sport at all levels (except Masters).

The MDF at least spurred all young swimmers and their parents to adopt good habits to actively consider whether medication, supplements and vitamins being taken should be declared on at least a once a year basis and was part of the anti-doping education process. That opportunity will now be lost and the ASA will have to get the right message over in other ways.

What does everyone think constitutes a national event? eg the National Speedo League, National ESSA Championships, UK Schools Games, the local qualifying rounds of The National Junior Speedo League etc....?????
