The following is snipped from RALSA's "Winter Swimming" page and should give some food for thought:

The general health benefits of winter swimming are well documented. Now there is new evidence to suggest that swimming in cold water can even be effective in fighting the HIV virus.
Lieping Ren. (pictured on the right) - a Chinese scientist, spent eight years researching the use of winter swimming to treat HIV/AIDS patients. The ideas of winter-swimming therapy stemmed from Lieping's years of swimming combined with his medical knowledge. The theory behind this therapy is quite complex. The human body can produce various changes under the stimulation of cold water. Leiping's work suggests that one such change is an enhancement of the immune system to impede, restrain, and destroy the HIV virus.
Lieping who recently moved to Sydney, Australia is keen to make contact with winter swimmers in European countries in order to widen and progress his research. Contact him directly for further details. Lieping is at renlieping@hotmail.com

Sounds too good to be true, but wouldn't it be great if the much sought-after cure for HIV/AIDS was to be something as simple as a regular icy dip?

I think this is interesting Pete: when Broomhill was open I used to go and swim a mile each time and it left you feeling so invigorated; after the pool closed in 2002 there was nowhere else to swim in the same way: only the indoor 25m pool which wasn't the same at all.

When i joined the gym in oct 2005 it was a revelation how good it felt to do a real cardio workout and really sweat during the 20 mins on the cross-trainer or whatever; a way to get rid of negative emotions as well as a bit of unwanted weight! So whether it's cold water or a workout our bodies obviously need and appreciate these sort of challenges.

Why THANK YOU! :thumb: You've made my day!

It's my original avatar but I think the reason it appeared b/w was because the file size was too large. I just cropped some of the pic and compressed the data a bit more.

The water I'm in looks grey 'cos it's the R.Weaver in November.

Common sense would lead us to believe cold water can cure a sexually transmitted desease, as we all know what happens to men's bits in cold water - therefore they would be unable to have how's your father therefore no desease???

I don't really think the subject of this thread is anything to joke about - seriously.

It refers to those already infected, howsoever they came to be. HIV is not necessarily contracted through sex.

Yes apologies, my comments were totally uncalled for, this was a poor attempt for a cheap laugh.
