The Netherlands have about 40 open water events yearly. 25 of these events are regulated by the Dutch swimming federation.
The Netherlands open water web with alle the info on the events can be found >>> NOWW! >>> (http://www.noww.nl). Much of the site is in Dutch (as you may appreciate) but many news items are international and in English.

I am sorry to report the NOWW website is back on-line but without the full interactive possiblities. Thease are still restricted due to a DdoS attack by malicious surfers.

PS Be welcome to visit. Please become a member (when the site is fully operational again).

But please do not use aliasses! You will be "banned" We have had an invasion of Russian etc. spammers looking for e-mailadresses (but not finding them). We ban them and block their IP-adress. We would not want that to happen with legitimate members.

Wildie, this website now says that swimmers for the 2007 Windermere "Breaststrokes" swim will either swim 2000 or 2500 metres. Not 1500 or 3000 as you have above. I'm not saying they're right and you're wrong, and it's only a minor point, but I thought I'd mention it.

Is swimming in open water alot harder than swimming in a pool!!

I dont ACTUALLY know just swimming. BUT im going to hazard a guess.

I bet it EASIER because you dont have any tumble turns to worry about.

I bet its HARDER because of the waves and tide splashing and pulling you about.

I bet its HARDER because its bloomin freezing.

HARDER because you cant just get out when your pooped because youve already swum into the middle on knowhere.

So my by powers of deduction, 3 to 1, yes i think its harder to swim in the sea.

Now THATS the kind of riddle i can handle!!!

Well, I have limited experience, having posting in this sub-forum far more often than I've wild swum. But I'll hazard a guess too.

On Wednesday one of the comments from one of the more experienced swimmers was that it was a great day because there was no wind to blow waves and water into your face. So more difficult due to waves, but not always.

Temperature. There was nothing wrong with the temperature on Wednesday. Though it has been bloomin' freezing on my few other attempts, this is probably because I've been starting slightly early in the season for a newbie. Even without a wetsuit it was quite comfortable.

Swimming into the middle of nowhere. This one actually freaked me out just slightly. I swam out with a wetsuit on, not realising how much it constricted me. So I switched to backstroke and got tired. I was only a few tens of metres from the edge, but once I'd decided to get out, that was enough to freak me out a bit given that I had to do it in the wetsuit and was tired. In some ways I'm a bit disappointed, as I feel that if I hadn't had the wetsuit on from the start I could have made it to "the statues", no time to describe what they are now.

I'm planning to not try swimming except up and down at the sort-of "beach" at one end with a wetsuit on until I get far more used to it.

Its Swimming - but not as we know it...Jim!!

Seriously though, its very different but that doesnt make it unenjoyable.

Stevie_k has overlooked the plus point that you float better in the sea. It takes getting used to and perhaps it is worth differentiating between sea swimming and sea racing. Sea swimming, over a reasonable (2-3 hour) distance is very pleasant on a good day - none of us sea swimmers can really say we enjoy the misery of a cold rough day.We enjoy the battling, but only when you've won!

Sea racing is, I think, far tougher than pool racing. The course is not totally predictable and you have to think about your course and tides.

Best to give it try on an organised 2K or so "race".You will be very welcom, safety is always taken care of and the distances are set to ensure participation not masochism.

I live in the US and would like to visit Europe in the first two weeks of August. Does anyone know of a 2k to 5k race that is open to all levels of swimmers? I was looking for something that was more fun and less competitive. My destination is not set. My wife was hoping for Germany, but my itinerary is wide open at this point. I can be contacted at dabertin@netnitco.net. Thank you.

I understand that several seaside resorts, including Bournemouth, Weymouth, and Torquay hold official swims during the summer and, when I was on holiday last August, in Newquay, Cornwall, I paid a visit to Padstow, where I saw a poster advertising an open water swim between Padstow and Roche. Does anyone know anything about this latter event, or any similar swims?

Yog-Sothoth
20-11-2007, 03:04 PM
Yeah. The Padstow swim is usually held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and it's a swim across the River Camel estuary from Padstow to Rock (Roche is about 15 miles away, inland!). They insist that you raise (or donate) at least 25 quid, so I haven't bothered to do this one so far. My local Open Water event is the Yacht Inn Swim from Newlyn Green to the Jubilee Slip in Penzance (circa 1300m). This takes place around the same time (late August), and costs a fiver to enter for which you get a T-shirt, and a good apres-swim atmos in the Yacht Inn.

There's a link to some pics of last years event on this page, under the "events" button:
(i'm in there somewhere :D )

Tentatively, there is a new year's day swim in King Lear's Lake, Watermead Park, Leicestershire, at 11am on New Year's Day. I don't know for sure if we have permission, and you may have to join the triathlon club, which costs £15. But there was one last year.

Hi All

I will be visiting England from New Zealand in July this year, based in and around my home town of Harlow, Essex.

I'll be quite pressed for time but would love to do some open water swimming while I'm there, if there was an event on somewhere reasonably local that would be even better. I wasn't a swimmer when I lived in England but now do a lot of pool and open water swimming, so I'd like to add some English experiences.

If anyone can point me in the direction of event calendars, local masters groups, etc that would be great.

Thanks

HI All,

Its not finalised yet, but I have had some very productive discussions with the River Wey Navigations Management ie the National Trust who are very "pro" an inaugural 2-2.5Km swim on 5th July as part of Guildford's festival week. There has been a raft race for years but I found some friendly contacts who have surprised me by their keenness to adopt this idea.

There will be a lot to do by way of sorting logistics, but I'd like to think we could see a number of swimclubbers who do the South Coast sea swims coming along.

Please PM me if you're up for it.

The BLDSA (http://www.bldsa.org.uk/) hold a quite a few open water competitions each year, and every swim in one of the ones organised by the BLDSA (rather than an affiliated club) is counted in a Grand Prix competition. Each swimmer gets a point per mile of the swim (no points if you don't finish), plus additional points if you're placed in the top 10.

I'm toying with the idea of entering some of these competitions as a bit of fun and perhaps useful training. They're scattered all over the country. Is anyone else interested:

This looks like a standard 6 person channel relay. I've done it as has e-fitz & Leprechaun. Dover swimmer has done a 2 way relay.

What do you need to know?

I did do until I saw how much. £8 registration, £5 a go, and in my case another tenner or so for the return rail journey.

Doesn't look as though they allow independent swimmers either and there's no way I'm joining a club. Salford Leisure didn't even have the common courtesy to reply to my email enquiry.

It only costs me £3.50 bus fare to get the real thing at New Brighton.

Every year the price goes up by a lot more than inflation. Its either more staff on the boats for H & S, cost of insurance or they are getting greedier every year. Take your pick.

As every Londoner knows, "The North", which starts at Watford, is a post-apolyptic, radioactive, wasteland, where people dressed in dirty rags fight over scraps of dandelion root in a desperate attempt to avoid starvation.

Not to mention the marauding packs of mutants and / or zombies ripping to pieces any other forms of life!

According to the RALSA website, on 27th September a 3 km swim is being held from Southend pier. As all you boys and girls know, Southend is in Essex, near the Thames estuary, and has the longest pier in Britain, if not the world. Anybody brave/insane enough to have a go?

Naked gentleman(?) swimming in the moat around the imperial palace, (I think), in Japan. man gets out, throws stones at police. Runs along wall. (That must have been a sight for sore eyes!) Jumps back in and swims again. Gets out and tries to attack police with a pole. (Don't even think about making the connection that's in your mind!) Highly amusing and only spoiled by the censorship demons doing the fuzzy wuzzies with the film so we can't see anything which might offend our modesty.

I've already done 4*C, and I've been timed for 30 mins in 5*C so other than being a slow breast-stroker I can't see that I'd have any problem with comparatively short immersion at 0-1*C.

Another one beyond Wildie's wildests!!

On Saturday 24 January the SLSC is hosting the
UK Cold Water Swimming Championships 2009 at Tooting Bec Lido
a fun filled day of freezing races, a crazy hat competition, a hot hog roast, competitors’ sauna and much more.

I havent yet seen an entry form, but the date is now frozen! (its the way ah tell 'em!)

Come on Pete - its only London, and certainly not as far as Guildford.
Animal0800 - its a sprinters only event, no excuse.
JL- they tell me cold water is good for firming those sagging bits (did I hear correctly?) and leaving the skin a healthy tingling pink...
Dunc - you'll only be seen as a true great if you can win in several disciplines (its this or synchro)
Stevie_K - its closer than Sheffield or Sunderland.
NVF - you will need a hat

It will be forking freezing thats for sure, a couple of weeks earlier than the World event earlier this year.

Lots of training to be done.

I'm not on an accountant's salary so how am I expected to afford the return rail fare for a 200 mile journey (check it out: Liverpool Lime St. to London Euston), together with the cost of two nights' accommodation in Rip-Off London?

Anyway, what have I to prove? Plenty of photographic evidence of my freezing swims.

OK the date of the premier event in the 2009 open water calendar has just been decided (not even announced yet! - so you heard it here first)

The Annual river Lee swim will take place on July 18th 2009, starting at 3.00 pm - a slightly earlier time than last year in response to widespread demands for a longer "post swim debriefing", i.e. party...

If you have never tried an Irish open water event, this has to be the one - extremely well organised, swimming through the centre of Cork with the sides of the river and bridges lined with spectators, the fire brigade on hand with their mobile "showers" and a festivities which continue on the boardwalk by the finish, into the small hours.

details will be published at www.corkmasters.ie in due course..

Be there, or forever regret it!!!

I quote....

http://www.slsc.org.uk/index.php?page_id=13

"On the 24th January 2009 South London Swimming Club will be holding the 4th UK Cold Water Swimming Championships at Tooting Bec Lido. This annual event has become a must for cold water swimmers, each year attracting many people who are trying it for the very first time. Age and ability is no barrier as with temperatures as low as 4°C, jumping in for the 30 metre races is a challenge in itself.

There are a variety of races this year, from the traditional "head up" breaststroke, the freestyle dash and relays, to the endurance 450 metre challenge for the really fool hardy.

To help competitors recover there'll be a Finnish sauna available after the races as well as a host of stalls and entertainment going on throughout the day."

Pity JL isnt around, I had intended to get her into a mixed relay.

I forgot this one:

The Endurance Challenge
The endurance challenge is the last swim of the day and will be for experienced cold water swimmers only. The challenge will be 450m (five lengths of Tooting Bec Lido) and is by invitation only. To apply please send us a request to take part stating your cold water swimming experience which must be confirmed by your swimming coach or official from your swimming organisation. To take part you must be at least 16 years of age and have an approved swim of 1km or 13 minutes (whichever is the longer) in water of 6 degrees centigrade (43 degrees Fahrenheit) or less. A short paragraph on your previous cold water swimming experience will also be required. The rules will also apply to the endurance event.

I think only our Wildie qualifies for this one? The race reminds me of another London tibe station...BARKING!
